Setting the SEI Data provided Netopia DSL Router into Bridge (Modem) Mode

Warnings:
  • By placing your DSL router in bridge mode, you are foregoing the basic firewall protection that the Netopia router provides while in router mode.
  • By placing your DSL router in bridge mode, you will be required to configure PPPoE (PPP over Ethernet) on whatever device you are directly connecting to the DSL modem. For instance if you are using a wireless router, you will need to configure it's WAN port to authenticate via PPPoE. If you are connecting a PC directly to the DSL modem, you will need to use PPPoE software on your PC to authenticate.
  • By placing your DSL router in bridge mode, only 1 device may be directly attached to the DSL modem. In order to use more than 1 computer through the modem a additional router will be required which will be the 1 device plugged directly into the modem.

Requirements:

  • Netopia 3341 ADSL Modem purchased from SEI Data.
  • You must already have connectivity between your computer and the DSL router.

Before you start:

  • Unplug the phone line from the modem while doing this and plug it back in once your modem is in bridge mode.
  • Reset the modem back to factory defaults.

  1. First, open a web browser and type 192.168.1.254 in the address bar and hit return. However if you have changed the IP address of your router at some point, use the appropriate IP address.

  2. If you are prompted to log in, for the Username/Login type "admin" and for the Password type "admin" (unless you have changed this, in which case log in using the appropriate login information).

  3. Click on the word "Home" in the upper left corner of the web page.
  4. Click on the "Expert Mode" link in the left column.

  5. If prompted by the "Expert Mode Confirmation" screen, click on the "OK".

  6. Click on the "Configure" link in the left column.

  7. Click the "LAN" link.
  8. In the box labeled "LAN IP Interface", verify that "Enable Interface" has a checkmark.
  9. In the box labeled "LAN IP Interface", verify that "IP Address" is set to "192.168.1.254".
  10. In the box labeled "LAN IP Interface", verify that "IP Netmask" is set to "255.255.255.0".
  11. In the box labeled "LAN IP Interface", verify that "Restrictions" are set to "None".
  12. Click on "Submit"

  13. In the box labeled "Other LAN Options", click on the "DHCP Server" link.

  14. In the box labeled "DHCP Server", set the "Server Mode" to "Off".
  15. In the box labeled "DHCP Server", click the "Submit" button.

  16. Click on the "Configure" link at the top of the page.

  17. Click on the "Advanced" link.

  18. Under the "Services" heading, click the "Ethernet Bridge" link.

  19. Checkmark the "Enable Bridging on Port" box.
  20. Click "Submit"

  21. Click on the "Configure" link at the top of the page.

  22. Click the "WAN" link.

  23. In the box labeled "WAN IP Interfaces", click the "PPP over Ethernet vcc1" link.

  24. In the box labeled "WAN IP Interface - (PPP over Ethernet vcc1)", remove the checkmark for "Enable Interface".
  25. In the box labeled "WAN IP Interface - (PPP over Ethernet vcc1)", click "Submit".

  26. Click the "WAN" link.

  27. In the box labeled "IP Gateway", remove the checkmark for "Enable Gateway Option".
  28. In the box labeled "IP Gateway", click "Submit".

  29. Click on the "Configure" link at the top of the page.

  30. Click on the yellow triangle in the upper right corner.

  31. Click on the "Save and Restart" link.

Your DSL Router is now in Bridge mode.

At this point, assuming you were using DHCP to obtain your IP address while you made these changes, you may loose connectivity to the modem. This is fine since we're done, but if you need to access the router at a future date, you can manually assign the IP address 192.168.1.5 with the netmask of 255.255.255.0 to your computer to then access the netopia at 192.168.1.254.
