Letter from our President

I finally have found time to start getting my new position’s house in order.  This is the first Newsletter that I actually have had time to sit down and write without the assistance of my extremely supportive Vice President Bill Simpson.  When I took over as President my work schedule was pretty busy at work and still is.  We are actually getting the first hand held talking graphing calculator ready for release at American Printing House which is a point of pride and a point that keeps me extremely busy.  With that said, Bill and Kathleen are keeping me on task and Mike and his nephew Brad is working with me to get our chapters social media upgraded.  What an upgrade to social media means to you the members is an easier way for you to keep up with both upcoming events and to get information from events you may have missed.  Not only will the new updated social media help members but it will help the leaders in that it will make it easy for us to get information out to you the members.

This newsletter also marks the time for the annual spring meeting and elections which will be discussed in the next section.  I would like you all to take this very seriously.  If you feel someone should be nominated please nominate them.  Like in any election we cannot vote someone in if they are not on the ballots.  I will leave you with a quote from Abraham Lincoln for just something to ponder while you’re thinking if you should nominate yourself and maybe help make a difference in our BVA chapter:

In the end, it's not the years in your life that count. It's the life in your years.

Annual Yearly Elections June 15 2013

It is time again to show your support and maybe make a contribution to your chapter of the BVA.  This year’s annual spring meeting and elections of officers will be held on June 15 in the V.A. Canteen.  The meeting will start at 10 AM with arrivals starting at 9 AM we will hold our meeting and elections first followed by a lunch catered by the wonderful V.A. canteen staff.

Normally I would list people standing for office but I think it’s important that we get as many nominations for each position even if someone is standing for election again. Each year the position of President, vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Chaplin, Sargent at Arms, and 3 year member at large are up for election.  I already have a few folks that are willing to stand for re-election but please send in your nomination forms if you feel you or someone will make a good officer.  Nominations will also be taken on the floor at the meeting.

I have not yet completed the agenda for the meeting but some things that will be discussed are:

·        New social media and Web site

·        Planning for Christmas

·        Voting for the national convention representative

·        Officers elections

·        Future possible events and goals

Please call (502) 276-1864 and RSVP so that we know how many people will be attending the meeting and lunch.  RSVP’s should be received by 6/10/2013.

Getting ready for this year’s national convention

As mentioned above we will be voting on our chapters National BVA convention representative.  This person will be our chapter’s voice and will listen and react to all National issues.  They will be our vote.  As you can see this is both an honor and a responsibility so it is important that we pick the right person.  If you are interested in serving as the representative for our chapter make sure you come and nominate yourself and make sure you will be able to make the convention.

This year’s National Convention will be hosted by
The Spokane Inland Empire Regional Group

Spokane, Washington
August 20-23, 2013.
If you’re interested in going to the convention you can find more information here:

VIST blind and visually impaired Vets support group

Many of the officers of our chapter attended the planning meeting for the new VIST support group.  The group will be having monthly meetings and the first one is on May 17.  If you are interested in attending these groups make sure you read the VIST newsletter and find out times, dates, subjects and RSVP to them so that we can support this great new group.  For more information you can call our VIST Coordinator Brenda Hibberd (502) 287-5049 or our BROS Julie Kennedy (502) 287-5898.
