Council
says proposal would put the county in the red; sheriff
holds steady for increase
|
Wanda English Burnett, Editor
Two things were clear when the
council adjourned Monday night. One, the sheriff
wants more money, and two, the council says
if they approve his proposed budget, the county
will have more than a $220,000 deficit that
will continue to accrue.
Ripley County Council members met Monday, November
24, after recessing from the regular meeting
on November 17 to further discuss the sheriffs
proposed budget.
Sheriff Tom Grills and 15 members of his staff,
jail, clerical and deputies, gathered once again
at the meeting, some expressing their concern
over the councils two percent raise for
the upcoming year - which is an across-the-board
raise for all county employees.

New citizen thankful for America
|
England
born world traveler John Halford says America
is the greatest country on earth and hes
thankful to be a citizen.
Independence Day came for Halford on August
23 of this year when his citizenship was finalized.
That day he proudly erected an American flag
at his home in Olean. I was so proud the
day I went down to Halcombs (Halcomb Home
Center) and bought the screws and put the flag
up on the front porch, Halford told The

Sunman's
garbage pickup rates to increase
|
|
Wanda English Burnett, Editor
Trash pick up will cost a little
more for residents of the town of Sunman come February.
That decision was made at the regular town board
meeting held November 20 at the town hall.
The rate for having trash picked up twice a week
has not changed in 16 years. Clerk-Treasurer Kris
Schneider told those at the meeting that the town
is charged $10.95 per household per month, with
the residents only consuming $4.50 of that cost.
It just isnt enough anymore, she
noted.

Deputies work 27 crashes in
7 days
|
|
Wanda English Burnett, Editor
Officers from the Ripley County Sheriffs
Office have been literally running from one end
of the county to the other investigating 27 crashes
in a short span of time, seven days.
It is not uncommon for the Ripley County Sheriffs
Office to investigate 27 traffic crashes in a seven
day span...in January or February, noted Chief
Deputy, Major David Pippin. He says when the weather
is terrible and the roadways are covered with snow,
ice, or sleet officers often respond to a large
number of accidents in a short period of time. But,
he said it is uncommon for the time of year, with
little weather to contribute to the causes.

board at South Ripley when his children do not
attend there, he had an answer. Gilpin told
the crowd that his son was bullied for years
and over the weekend had been hospitalized from

|
Wanda English Burnett,
Editor
This election will go down
in history for several reasons and Ripley County
residents will be documented on film thanks
to a New York film company that has been filming
in the county producing a documentary on the
voting process.
David Deschamps, one of the three producers
working on The Voting Film Project, was in Versailles
recently and noted that the project is shaping
up nicely, thanks to Indiana being one of the

Ripley
County industrial businesses organize
|
|
Beth Rumsey, Staff Writer
Industrial businesses within Ripley
County have organized to form the Ripley County
Business Alliance (RCBA) to address their special
needs and to give a voice as a group,
said Gary Norman, executive director of the Ripley
County Economic Development Corporation and organizer
of the Ripley County Business Alliance. It
is designed to create a network within the industrial
commerce of Ripley County, noted Norman.
The RCBA was created out of necessity,
said Norman. The RCBA is designed to help small
businesses keep up to date and to become aware of
grants, tax incentives, and programs designed for
them. One of the biggest problems that all
businesses face is time, or the lack there of,
said Norman. They are busy putting out fires
and reacting to issues that they face in day to
day operations.
