Indians open football season with 41-20 loss at South Dearborn

Milan's football team opened their season last Friday with a road game at South Dearborn High School against the Knights. The Indians lost to the Knights 41-20 in the season opener.

The Indians had a staggering first quarter giving up 20 points to the Knights while they were held scoreless. In the second quarter the Indians managed to get into scoring position early thanks to a 73 yard Matt Posten kick off return, which resulted in a scuffle causing one player from each team to be ejected from the game.

After the kick off return the Indians had nine yards to go for the score but were unable to get the ball in the endzone forcing a turnover on downs. On South Dearborn's first play from
scrimmage their running back ran the length of the field to score the Knights' second touchdown of the quarter, making the score 34-0.

On Milan's next drive they worked the ball down the field and finally scored a touchdown when quarterback Ben Schafer connected with receiver Josh Schwanholt to give the Indians their first 7 points of the season.

In the third quarter the Indians were held scoreless again while the Knights added another touchdown to their total. Going into the fourth quarter the Indians were trailing 41-7.

Milan managed to score two more times in the fourth quarter when Schafer connected with receivers Matt Posten and Andy McIntosh to give the Indians their 20 points of the game.

Nick Arthur was the Indians leading rusher with 40 yards on 12 at
tempts for an average of 3.3 yards per carry and a long of 17 yards. Bob Stanley finished the game with 18 yards on 3 attempts with a long of 16. Andy "Bubba" McIntosh led the Indians in receiving yards with 68 on 5 catches and a touchdown. Josh Schwanholt had 64 receiving yards on 2 catches with a touchdown and Matt Posten had one catch for 30 yards and a touchdown. Ben Schafer finished the game with 162 passing yards going 9 for 15 with 3 touchdown's and one interception.

As a team the Indians finished the game with 216 total yards, 54 rushing and 162 passing. The had 6 first downs and 4 penalties. On defense they allowed 443 total yards, 260 rushing and 183 passing.

Milan will continue their season this Friday at home against Batesville. That game is scheduled to start at 7:00 pm.

SR's Reserve Volleyball team goes 3-0 in Round Robin Tourney

South Ripley's reserve volleyball team traveled to Shawe last Saturday to compete in a Four Team Round Robin Tournament. The lady Raiders finished the tournament with a 3-0 record defeating Southwestern, Jac-Cen-Del and Shawe.

In their game against Southwestern the Lady Raiders won in three games 25-18, 13-25, 25-23. Against the Lady Eagles South Ripley won in two games with scores of 25-18 and 25-22 and against Shawe they won in three games 25-15, 17-25 and 25-18.

The top server in the tourney for the Raiders was Erica Burress who went 26 for 28 with 3 aces. Court
ney Walker had the most aces with 5 on 19 for 23 serving. Sally Adams went 21 for 23 with 2 aces and Susannah Mann went 25 for 28 with 2 aces. Beth Stratton was the teams top passer completing 64 out of 70 passes. Courtney Walker went 56 for 62 in the tournament. Kellie Collier and Susannah Mann were the top setters with Collier going 20 for 24 and Mann going 25 for 29. Erica Burress led the team with 17 kills on 32 of 35 hitting followed by Beth Stratton with 6 kills on 18 for 21 hitting and Susannah Mann with 3 kills going 16 for 18.

The Lady Raiders play again tonight (Tues.) at home against Switzerland County. That game is scheduled to start at 6:00 pm.
