Milan Weightlifters have good showing at Columbus East Weigh lifting Championships

Weight lifters from Milan High School brought home five medals at the third annual Columbus East Weight lifting Championships on Friday, March 12.

Seven lifters from Milan attended the competition including Jerrid McDonald, Brandon Stanley, Shane Smithson, Shane McCormick, Craig Hornberger, Derrick Pennington and Brian Everage. Other schools in attendance were Madison, Jennings County, Columbus East, Brownstown Central, New Albany, Anderson and South Decatur.

Against this group of 4A schools the Indians placed second in team speed with a average of 2.75 in the twenty- yard dash. Every one of the Indians placed in the top ten of their weight class.
In the 160-180 weight class, Shane Smithson received a silver medal in the bench press. Craig Hornberger received two bronze medals in each of the squat and clean, despite lifting in an older age bracket.

In the 181-200 weight class, Derrick Pennington tied for third in the clean and placed sixth in total, all scores combined.

In the 200-23 weight class, Brian Everage received a silver medal in bench with a 310 pound personal record. He also placed second in total.

In the 141-160 weight class, Jerrid McDonald tied for first in the clean and placed fifth in total.

The Milan weight lifters are coached by Mark Garrett, P.E. teacher and strength coach at Milan High School..

The Indians sent seven lifters to compete in the third annual Columbus East Power Lifting Championships on March 12. Those seven were Brian Everage, Shane Smithson, Shane McCormick, Jerrid McDonald, Brandon Stanley and Derrick Pennington.
