Eagles score victory over Pacers

by Marcus Wirth

The Jac-Cen-Del varsity baseball team avenged an earlier loss in the season against the Switzerland County Pacers at Jac-Cen-Del on May 16. The Pacers put two runs on the board in the first, but that was all they would manage. The Eagles tied it up in their half of the first at 2-2. The Eagles added another run in the second.

They then rallied to score five in the fourth and four in the fifth for a final score of 12-2 in five innings due to the ten run rule.
After the first inning Tyler Bradshaw was perfect. He sat down twelve straight after the first inning. He was the winning pitcher throwing five innings. He gave up two runs, none earned, and had eight strikeouts. Every Eagle starter had a hit. Bryan Schwanholt was 3-4 with five RBI's and scored three runs. Adam Peetz was 3-3 with an RBI and a run scored. The Eagles are now 12-5 and 7-3 in the conference.

Raiders defeat Rising Sun

by Mark Downard

South Ripley locked up in a defensive battle Monday, May 16 at Rising Sun. Jacob Lemon pitched for the Raiders and was backed up by some stellar defensive plays. Rising Sun scored first in the second on back to back doubles. It looked like the Shiners would add to that lead, but catcher, Josh Cumberworth threw out the runner trying to steal third and Lemon got the next two batter to ground out. In the top of the third the Raiders evened the score 1-1 when Russ Steinhauer was hit by a pitch, stole second, and scored on a throwing error.

It looked like the Shiners would regain the lead in the fourth with a lead off single followed by a double, but the runner was thrown out at the plate on a relay from Michael Fear. Rising Sun threatened again in the sixth, but a 6-4-3 double play stopped the threat. The Raiders scored the winning run in the top of the seventh inning when with two outs Steinhauer reached on an error and stole second. Brandon Seabolt hit a slow roller to shortstop and beat the throw to first. Steinhauer rounded third and raced home with the winning run, making the final score 2-1. Lemon pitched a 1-2-3 seventh to record the complete game win striking out seven Shiners along the way.
