Over
the weekend the Baltimore Orioles
came to Cincinnati
to take on the
Reds in an interleague matchup.
This was the Orioles first time
playing
in Cincinnati at the Great American
Ballpark, because until recently
National League teams never played
American League teams until the
World Series. The Reds won the
series 2-1. In town with the Orioles was Brian
Ebel, a 1984 graduate of South Ripley
High School. During high school,
Ebel was a member of the golf and
baseball teams, along with many other
activities. After graduating he attended
Eastern Kentucky University to study
athletic training.
When Ebel graduated from EKU he
started working in the Orioles organization
with farm teams. His first team was
in Bluefield, West Virginia, then
he spent time with a minor league
team in Hagerstown, Maryland before
moving up to the Baltimore, Orioles.
Ebel is now the Assistant
Trainer with the Orioles, and is
responsible
for rehabilitation work for the team,
along with many other duties. Ebel
has been in the Orioles organization
for about 15 years. Ebel, his wife
Nancy, and their sons Brady and Brett,
live in Baltimore, Maryland. The
Ebels traveled to Cincinnati and visited
friends and family while they were
in town.
Chris Smith, also
a South Ripley graduate and athletic
trainer,
has helped open
doors for Ebel while he was studying
athletic training. The Orioles were in Cincinnati to
play a three-game series over the
weekend. On Friday night the Reds
lost to the Orioles 4-3. Rodrigo
Lopez picked up the win for the Orioles,
and B.J. Ryan was credited with the
save. Aaron Harang was the losing
pitcher for the Reds.
Melvin Mora hit his
thirteenth homerun of the year
for the Orioles on Friday
night, driving in two runs in the
third inning. For Cincinnati, Felipe
Lopez homered to center in the bottom
of the third inning, making the score
3-1 Orioles.
In the sixth inning
Sean Casey scored on a wild pitch.
In the top of the
eighth inning Miguel Tejada doubled
to left, scoring Mora. The Reds
answered in the bottom of the eighth
when
Ken Griffey, Jr. hit one over the
wall in right field, making the
final score 4-3 Orioles. On Saturday night, the Reds defeated
the Orioles 10-1. Brandon Claussen
picked up the win, and Daniel Cabrera
was the losing pitcher for the Orioles.
The Reds had a five-run second inning,
highlighted with a grand slam by
Felipe Lopez, scoring Rich Aurilia,
Jacob Cruz, and Javier Valentin.
In the bottom of the third Adam Dunn
homered to right, scoring Griffey.
The Reds continued scoring in the
bottom of the sixth when Lopez singled,
scoring Aurilia and Valentin. Casey
singled to center driving in Lopez,
and advancing Randa.
The Orioles scored
their only run on a homer by Sal
Fasano in the top
of the eighth inning. On Sunday afternoon
the Reds picked up another victory
over the Orioles
with a score of 10-6. In the second inning Sammy Sosa
homered to center, scoring Tejada.
Brian Roberts then hit a single,
driving in Geronimo Gil. In the bottom
of the inning, Aurilia homered to
left scoring Griffey and Dunn for
the Reds.

sixth, Lopez singled to left, scoring
Kelly.
In the seventh inning
the Reds picked up three more runs
making the score
10-4. The Orioles picked up two
runs in the top of the ninth,
making the
final score 10-6 Reds.
Following the three
games over the weekend, the Orioles
have a record of 36-26, placing
them at the top of the American
League East standings. The Reds
have a 26-36 record in the
National League Central standings.
The Orioles traveled home this week to play the Houston Astros,
and they will continue play at home over the weekend against the Colorado Rockies.
The Reds traveled
to Boston to take on the Red Sox
in a three game series, and they
will return home to begin a four
