Students, staff at SR contribute to Red Cross

South Ripley Jr-Sr. High School students and
staff have already collected $1,601.83 for the American Red
Cross hurricane relief fund for victims of Hurricane Katrina.
Clubs and organizations as well as classrooms sponsored a
variety of fundraisers with still more donations to come.
Among the projects was the cross country team's "Run
for New Orleans," organized by Coach Sam Durham. Team
members ran 79 miles and are in the process of collecting pledges
from their sponsors.
A bake sale sponsored by the South Ripley Student Council,
SADD, and Raiders Riot staff was among the fundraisers. Monetary
donations also came from the varsity cheerleaders, the Sunshine
Society and the senior class.
In Mrs. Lynn Cumberworth's first period class, the students
answered a challenge from their teacher, while the National
Junior Honor Society sponsored donut sales, and varsity and
reserve volleyball teams and fans contributed at the Rising
Sun/South Ripley volleyball games.
According to Mrs. Nancy Durham, who coordinated the fundraising
efforts, commodities are now being collected for friends and
family of the Shivers, who live in Mississippi and are among
the hurricane victims. These items will be used for a free
store for those in need of food, water, and supplies.
