Underwood defends Raiders' goal

Gary Franklin - Sports Writer

Ryan Underwood, a senior at South Ripley has done much to prepare himself to be the best he can be, at a sport that requires him to anticipate, hurry-up, and wait. Underwood as the Raider goalie on the Varsity Boys Soccer Team, is their last hope of keeping their opponents from scoring.

With the movement of a cat on the prowl, he continually sizes up the opposition to best defend his goal.

Works toward scholarship

Underwood aspires to earn a college scholarship by way of his soccer talent. His intent is to major at college in landscaping or something in the agricultural field.

He has attended Indiana University soccer camps the last five years. Last year he also attended soccer camp at Ohio State University, and played with an indoor soccer league in '04 and '05 to hone his skills.

With a deep passion for the sport, Underwood also plays on the Batesville spring league.

Coach Myers when speaking of Underwood says it is a pleasure to have one as devoted as Ryan on the team. He also states he has others with positive attitudes and they too want to see, and work hard to see that the sport progresses to higher levels at South Ripley for years to come.

As goalie, Underwood is ever searching the field, attempting to figure from where and at what angle to best set up in defence of the 8' x 24' goal.
