Polling places to change
Wanda English Burnett - Editor
According to information from Clerk Ginger Bradford,
voters in some Ripley County precincts will be voting at different
places in the spring.
· All voters in Otter Creek Township, precincts one
and two will now vote at the Holton Community Building on Versailles
Street. Previously they voted at the firehouse.
· Voters in Laughery 1 will vote upstairs at Coonhunters
Lodge, rather than downstairs.
· Those voting in Adams 2, will now go to the new Sunman
American Legion.
· Voters in Shelby Township who previously voted at
New Marion, will now be casting votes at the Shelby Christian
Church.
Bradford noted that the changes are due to the federal HAVA
(Help America Vote Act) and makes polling places to everyone
including those with handicaps.
"We only had to make major changes to three of the polling
places," noted Bradford, adding, "that's a big savings
to taxpayers." She said the county is aware of the costs
involved with upgrading polling places, and they have weighed
every option.
With only three places having major changes, it became evident
that Ripley County had already been working hard to make sure
voting was accessible to everyone.
While voters won't have to make decisions before the Primary
Election in May of 2006, Bradford is busy making sure the polling
places meet federal guidelines and make it possible for everyone
to vote.
In the Primary Election there are several races up for grabs.
They include assessor, auditor, surveyor, all trustee positions
(trustees and boards) and precinct committeemen, sheriff, prosecutor,
council seats for Districts 1,2,3 and 4, and Commissioner seat
for District 1.
More information on where to vote with exact locations of
all polling sites will be published closer to election time.
