Lady Raiders break the ice

Gary Franklin - Sports Writer

Though it seemed a long time coming to the South Ripley Lady Raider faithful, the varsity squad put a "W" on their season record.

The potential seemed to always be present, just not happening. However, on Tuesday evening, December 6 against the Lawrenceburg Lady Tigers, the right combination worked together to hang tough for four quarters to claim the victory at 51-44.

The 7 point win, a result of heads up teamwork, taking advantage when opportunity presented itself by capitalizing on fast breaks, and pulling the ball back out and setting up plays when not available.

The old adage, "when things go good, wait, something will make it change", held true once again as near the end of a victory sought fourth quarter, the coach's daughter, Alex Snyder, a 5' 11" freshman, suffered a dislocated shoulder. Yet the coach and team held to the business at hand to win.

The game as it opened found the Lady Tigers taking possession at the mid-court tip. However, Kristen Huss of the Lady Raider team was first to put points on the score board with a field goal. The Lady Tigers' Chelsie Mollaun missed a pair of free throws and Jayna Kohorst made 1 of 2 attempts in her effort at the line for a 3-1 score.

Ciara McGuire of the Lady Raiders scored 2 of 2 FT's and teammate Huss netted her second FG for the lead at 6-1 near the halfway point of the first quarter. Lady Tiger Kohorst added a field goal quickly countered by Lady Raider Huss, the score 8-3.

The Lady Tigers put together back to back scores with Sara Vorbroker draining a 3 pointer and Ayrica Harvey scoring 1 of 2 at the foul line drawing the score to 8-7 at the 1:10 mark.

In the remaining time, Lady Raider Beth Stratton scored her first field goal of the game as did Leah Clark of the Lady Tigers ending the first quarter with a score of 10-9 Raiders.

During the second quarter the Lady Raiders, though trailing for the first time at 11-10 off Tiger Harvey's FG, expanded their lead to 5 with a score of 22-17.

Scoring by the Lady Raiders in the second quarter was from Huss with a 3, Beth Thieman a FG and 1/2 FT's, Josie Franklin with a FG, Abbey Lemon a FG and Ashley Thomas putting her first FG through as well.

Lady Tiger scorers in the second quarter were Harvey with a FG, Kohorst 1/2 FT's, and Vorbroker with a 2 point FG and a 3 pointer taking the score at half time to Raiders 22 and Tigers 17.

The Lady Raider scoring in the third, McGuire 2 FG's, Thomas 2 FG's, Huss a FG, and Thieman a FG. The Lady Tiger scoring the result of Harvey 2 FG's, Vorbroker a 2 point FG and a 3 pointer. The score at the end of three 34-27 Lady Raiders.

In the fourth, the Lady Raiders sealed the deal at 51-44. Fourth quarter scoring by the Lady Tigers came from Harvey with 2 FG's and 3/4 FT shooting, Kohorst 2/4 FT's, Kelli Taylor adding a FG, and Alicia Haney converting a FG and FT combination for the old fashioned 3, and Vorbroker with a FG and 1/2 FT's.

Final quarter scoring for the Lady Raiders came at the hands of Thieman with 2 FG's and 2/2 FT's, Stratton adding a FG, Thomas 2 FG's, McGuire with 3/4 FT's, and Kristen Huss 2/2.
