Twisters leave Lady Raiders in a spin

Gary Franklin - Sports Writer

The Lady Raiders continue their roller coaster season as they fell again, Thursday, December 22 to the Lady Twisters of Oldenburg Academy in an overtime finish by a score of Oldenburg 44-38 South Ripley.

The Lady Raiders contested the Austin Cougars in a losing effort only five days earlier, giving them a first loss of the last 5 games played. That game was played without their starting center, Abbey Lemon. Tonight the Lady Raiders had Lemon back in a starting role even though obviously not at 100% yet.

The mid court jump to start the game posted Senior Kristen Huss of the Lady Raiders at 5'10" against the Lady Twister's Junior Dominika Roberts at 6'1". The tip was to the Twisters who hurriedly scored the first 2 points of the game. That score was at the hands of Lady Twister Amanda Dickman. The Lady Twister's Roberts scored to give them a 4-0 lead, and as the Lady Raiders attempted to get the ball across the 10 second line, they were called for the turn over.

Capitalizing on the Lady Raider error, Lady Twister Roberts stuck 2 more points on the board taking the game to a 6-0 score and the clock at 4:48 in the first quarter. The Raider coach called for a time-out.

Following the time-out, Lady Twister Roberts was called for her second foul, causing her to sit a spell on the bench. On Lady Raider Beth Thieman's first touch of the basketball in a position to shoot, she drained a 3 point shot. Within seconds, Lady Raider Huss drilled a 3 point shot herself tieing the game at 6-6 at the 3:48 mark.

Lady Twister Megan Dickman scored a FG for her team. That was followed by another Lady Raider Thieman 3, to give the Lady Raiders their first lead in the ballgame at 9-8 with 2:55 remaining in the first quarter. Ashley Thomas scored a put back for the Lady Raiders taking their lead to 11-8.

Lady Twister Kristin Billingsley cashed in 2 points from the free throw line off the Lemon foul. With 1:55 remaining, Josie Franklin and Beth Stratton entered for the Lady Raiders replacing Lemon and Thomas. Franklin drained a 3 point shot at the buzzer for the Lady Raiders completing the first quarter scoring giving the Lady Raiders a lead of 14-10 after one complete.

Oldenburg scoring in the second quarter was the result of Billingsley with 1, Jenna Meyer 6, and Brittany Wurtz 1 for a 18 point half time score.

The Lady Raiders' scoring in the second came from Huss with 5, Thieman 3, and Lemon 3 for a total of 25 at the half time break.

Scoring in the last half for the Lady Twisters came from Roberts with 2, Meyer 3, A. Dickman 2, M. Dickman 9, Wurtz 4 for a 38 point game total.

The Lady Raider scoring in the second half came from Lemon 4, Thieman 2, Ciara McGuire 2, Stratton 2, Huss 3 for a game total of 38 points.

A 38 - 38 tie at the end of regulation prompted a 4:00 over-time session of which the Lady Twisters scored 6 points while holding the Lady Raiders scoreless to make a final score Oldenburg 44 - 38 for the Lady Raiders.

The Lady Raider Varsity scoring totals were Thieman and Huss with 11 points each, Lemon with 7, Franklin adding 3, and 2 each by McGuire, Thomas, and Stratton.

The Lady Raider Reserve pulled out a victory at 36 to 21 over the Lady Twisters.

The South Ripley Lady Raider Varsity will next face competition at the Ripley County Tournament at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 3, against the Milan Lady Indians.
