Gary Franklin - Sports Writer

The Jac-Cen-Del Eagles added celebration to their 2006 Senior Night festivities, Tuesday, February 21, with a victory over the North Decatur Chargers, 60-52. The timing of the match was the result of rescheduling as the December 9 scheduled game was postponed due to inclement weather at that time.

ORVC girls basketball - 'wraps up'

Gary Franklin - Sports Writer

In wrapping up the ORVC season, as for most girls' basketball teams, is barely over, but already plans and thoughts of next year's season is heavy on the minds of the coaches, players, and fans. The stats released on February 21 about the 2006 ORVC Varsity Girls' Basketball Teams season found a 3 way tie for the top spot as the Jac-Cen-Del Lady Eagles, the Southwestern Hanover Lady Rebels, and the Switzerland County Lady Pacers, all finished their seasons with identical 5-1 records in conference play.

With a count of 3-3, the Lady Raiders centered the conference road, and were followed with a 3 way tie at 1-5 through conference play by the Madison Shawe Lady Hilltoppers, the Milan Lady Indians, and the Rising Sun Lady Shiners.

The 2006 overall most winning varsity record was claimed by the Jac-Cen-Del Lady Eagles with a 19-5 season. Following JCD were: Southwestern at 18-5, Switzerland County at 13-9, South Ripley at 10-13, Shawe Memorial at 9-12, Milan at 7-14, and Rising Sun with a 1-20 season finish.

The 2006 Reserve Basketball Teams finished with Southwestern posting a 6-0 ORVC record, followed by Jac-Cen-Del and South Ripley tied with 4-2 finishes. Switzerland County finished and Milan each finished at 3-3, with Rising Sun 1-5 and Shawe Memorial at 0-6.

The reserve overall records indicate a 17-2 finish for Southwestern Hanover's efforts, while Jac-Cen-Del earned a 16-4 count, and South Ripley rounded out the top three spots with a 9-11 season. Continuing in fourth place were Switzerland County at 7-11, for fifth-Milan with 6-12, Rising Sun 1-17, and Madison Shawe with 4-11 rounded out the teams' seasons record counts.

Obviously all teams can't ride the high road all of the time, however, this season allowed most teams to run on highs occasionally, moderating those periods of low. This season as most, where the middle of the pack was not really pleasant, but there were worse places. A season where lows were lifted with extreme highs as was the case for the Milan Lady Indians in their victory over the Ripley County Tourney Champion Batesville Lady Bulldogs by 8 points.

A season where the Lady Raiders of South Ripley, under new leadership, went to a final round as strong contenders, and had every bit as much to offer as did the two teams finishing over them in the ORVC records, as they humbled the Switzerland County Lady Pacers and only barely lost to Southwestern in the final minutes of the final game of their sectional.

The Jac-Cen-Del Lady Eagles hit their highs and lows as did every other team, burning a trail that looked at times to be unstoppable, unfortunately falling short at the least opportune time during their sectional championship game. Yet parents, teammates, schoolmates, coaches, and communities are collectively appreciative of all the athletes' work.
