The Milan Town Board held its regular meeting
March 13 with all board members present.
Town Manager, John Ingram, reported that the Ripley County Commissioners
want to know if Milan plans to annex the new subdivision on
Mill Road. He also stated that opening bids on the Town Hall
project have been received.
Ingram reported that because of all the rain,
his crews have been busy cleaning out catch basins. Board members
questioned how well the sewer plant did with the heavy rain.
He and Ethel Morgan, of Wastewater Management, said that there
were intermittent overflows at the lift station and at the plant.
Morgan told the board that IDEM is looking at the incident as
an act of God. She reported that there were 1,000,000 gallons
of storm water that overflowed the system.
Town Marshal Tom Holt, reported there had been
52 traffic stops and 61 calls for service. There were no burglaries
and no traffic crashes involving injuries.
Milan Park President Linda Baurley, reported that steel doors
for the shelter house would be bought to reduce vandalism. She
also reported that the Farmer's Market would like to use the
park again this year from May through November. Before opening
the bathrooms for the summer, water lines will need to be repaired.
Morgan reported that patching Franklin Street
would not be possible. It will have to be paved. Ellis and Main
streets are to be patched.
In miscellaneous business: the town budget was
discussed. Board President Paul Hildebrand reported that a $20-$22,000
cut was anticipated, but the town will actually receive $54,000
less than last year with which to operate. Larry Eaton, town
attorney, said that it is possible that excise taxes being down
may be partially to blame. The town is sending an appeal, but
it is doubtful that it will change the outcome.
