Eagles hold winter sports program

Jac-Cen-Del High School Athletic Director Mark Meyer cordially opened the Eagles' winter sports recognition program welcoming coaches, team members, their parents and guests.

The Jr. High event got underway near 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 23, after being postponed from the scheduled Tuesday, due to the inopportune winter snow fall of Monday, March 20, that closed all area schools for Tuesday operation.

The Jr-High team coaches were the first to be acknowledged, beginning with 7th grade girls coach, April Hughes.

Coach Hughes acknowledged the team members which included, Hailee Sizemore, Samantha White, Brooke Gilland, Nicole Wirth, Brooklyn Billman, Kayla Kohlman, Erica Hicks, Alyssa Hammond, Kristina Moore, Megan Joseph-Mgr., Andrea Roberts, Becca Wagner, Janae Horn, Erica Caudill and Jordan Rayburn, Manager.

The 7th grade girls' season team record was 11-6. Specific awards were presented to: Andi Roberts - Most Improved, Most Determined - Brooke Gilland, and the Mental Attitude and Scholastic Award went to Becca Wagner with a 10.42 GPA.

Travis Rohrig, 7th grade boys' coach, introduced his team members: Joe Abplanalp, Clay Comer, Derek Huntington, Zach Schuler, Zach Swain, Kyle Abrams, Dalton Garnett, Derek Lunsford, Brock Shadday, Tyler Dickman - Manager, Trevor Arnett, Travis Hardesty, Caleb Payne, and Logan Simon.

The 7th grade boys' season team record was 17-2. Specific awards were presented to: Zach Schuler - Most Improved, Derek Lunsford - Most Determined, Mental Attitude - Joe Abplanalp, and Scholastic to Dalton Garnett for a 10.85 GPA.

The Jr.-High cheerleaders were coached by Marla Simon. Coach Simon introduced the squad: Brooke Gilland, Erica Hicks, Megan Joseph, Kayla Kohlman, Andi Roberts, Kristin Konradi, Renee Meister, Amanda Rangel, Alissa Stolze, and Sam White.

The 7th grade cheer awards were presented to: Kayla Kohlman for Mental Attitude and Scholastic, with a 10.14 GPA.

The 8th grade cheer awards were presented to: Renee Meister - Mental Attitude, and Scholastic- Sam White, with a 10.33 GPA.

Matt McNew coached the 8th grade girls' team, and the team members were: Sam White, Jessica Comer, Melissa Horan, Kristin Konradi, Andrea Rogers, Brittany Williams, Kayla Fullenkamp, Alissa Stolze, and Brittany Gayheart - Manager.

The 8th grade teams' season record was 6-12. Specific awards were presented to: Jessica Comer and Alissa Stolze for Most Improved, Most Determined and Scholastic for a 10.33 GPA, and Mental Attitude to Melissa Horn.

David Espinda coached the 8th grade boys' team. The team consisted of: Shane Adams, Zach Kappes, Ryan Schuler, Ethan Wagner, Dan Harlemert, Donnie Lows, Devin Shadday, Brandon Wilhoit, Ethan Harmeyer, Mike Luers, Trent Tucker, and Eric Wirth.

The 8th grade boys' team season record was 8-10. Specific awards were presented to: Ethan Harmeyer - Most Improved, Brandon Wilhoit - Most Determined, Mental Attitude - Dan Harlemert, and Scholastic to Eric Wirth with a 11.16 GPA.

Following the Jr. High award presentations, A. D. Meyer offered a photo opportunity and refreshments to guests before opening the high school program a little after 7:00 p.m.

The High School Program was called to order by A. D. Meyer, with a welcome to all present, acknowledging the hard work and effort put forth by coaches, team members, parents, and others in obtaining a positive and productive winter sports program at the Jac-Cen-Del Schools.

Following a welcome and introduction, Gary Franklin, sports editor for Ripley Publishing Co., was asked to open the presentations portion with the naming of the winners of both the 25th Boys' Basketball - Wm. "Tiny" Hunt Award and the 14th Girls' Basketball Excellence Award.

Ripley Publishing Co. sponsors the awards annually. Criteria for selection are: a male & female senior varsity basketball team member of Milan, Jac-Cen-Del, or South Ripley High School who has displayed a positive role model with sportsmanship qualities and basketball abilities representative of the county.

To determine the recipient, ballots with all eligible senior players' names were sent to the three team coaches, their team scorekeepers, and two other Ripley County sports enthusiasts, then a point system was used to determine a winner. The awards are separate and do not necessarily end up at the same school.

Of the ballots returned, Jac-Cen-Del Eagle senior, Kyle Horan won the 25th Wm. "Tiny" Hunt Award, and Jac-Cen-Del Lady Eagle senior, Janelle Hardesty, was the recipient of the 14th Girls' Basketball Excellence Award.

Eagle Freshman Boys' Basketball Coach Roy Thomas introduced his team members: Curtis Abrams, Matt Gehl, Justin Stepleton, Jamieson Benoit - Manager, Tim Arnett, Gerald Hardesty, Blake Sutton, Josh Forbes, Joe Rangel, and Denver Taylor.

The freshmen Eagles went undefeated for the season and tournament to follow with a record of 18-0 and earned the title ORVC Tourney Champs and Ripley County Tourney Champs in the process.

Specific awards were presented to: Joe Rangel - Most Improved, Gerald Hardesty - Most Determined, Mental Attitude - Matt Gehl and Blake Sutton, Free Throw Award - Blake Sutton, and Scholastic Award to Gerald Hardesty with a 11.14 GPA.

Jac-Cen-Del Lady Eagle Reserves were coached by Maurice Wagner, and the team members were: Allana Newhart, Kara Harlamert, Tasha Krieg, Regina Ricke, Carissa Simon, Valorie Wagner, Danielle Leighty, Ciara Bonnlander, Kristen Hicks, Janine Huff, and Abby Morehead.

The Lady Eagle reserve team ended their season with a 16-4 record. Specific awards were presented to: Regina Ricke - Most Improved, Kristen Hicks - Most Determined, Mental Attitude - Valorie Wagner, Free Throw Award - Carissa Simon and Kaylin Ploeger, and the Scholastic Award to Valorie Wagner with a 11.28 GPA.

The JCD Boys' reserve team was coached by Steve Narwold. The Eagle JV team members were: Thomas Wenning, Aaron Harmeyer, Andrew Huff, Andy Wolff, Eric Horan, Austin Lord, David Busch, Coty Horn, and Kellen Stolze.

Coach Narwold recognized the team for their hard work, noting that the team ended with a season record of 12-8. Specific awards presented were: Most Improved - David Busch, Most Determined - Coty Horn, Mental Attitude - Thomas Wenning, Free Throw Award - Kellen Stolze, and the Scholastic Award to David Busch with a 11.28 GPA.

The JCD Eagle JV and Varsity Cheerleader Squads were coached by Cindy Toops and Jane Ann Vankirk.

Those receiving varsity letters were: Abby Coyle, Amber Lunsford, Kara Harlamert, Kalenia Simon, Laura Hicks, and Kaitlin Hughes. Cheerleader lifters, Michael Tunny and Justin Eaton, also received varsity letters.

Varsity squad: Mental Attitude - Abby Coyle, Outstanding Cheerleader - Amber Lunsford and Kaleina Simon, and the Scholastic Award - Amber Lunsford with a 11.00 GPA.

JV squad certificate recipients were: Megan Jones, Tanaha Simon, Jaime Lunsford, Rachel Toops, and Abby Morehead. JV Mental Attitude - Tanaha Simon, and Scholastic Award to Jaime Lunsford with a 10.57 GPA.

Lady Eagle Varsity Coach Scott Smith introduced team members: Erika Simon, Kiersten Young, Carissa Simon, Emily Einhaus, Abby Rohlfing, Kaylin Ploeger, Janelle Hardesty, Abby Lauber, Talena Huff, Alisha Lord, Amanda Harmeyer, and managers Justin Eaton, Luke Grow, and Lindsey Payne.

Certificates were presented to Carissa Simon, Kara Harlemert, and Valorie Wagner. Coach Smith and his varsity squad finished their season with a record of 19-4, earning ORVC Co-Champs title. Other specific awards were: MVP Award, Assist Award, and 14th Ripley Publishing Co. Girls' Basketball Excellence Award - Janelle Hardesty, Captain Award - Amanda Harmeyer and Abby Rohlfing, Hustler and Free Throw Award - Alisha Lord, Leading Rebounder - Emily Einhaus, Most Improved - Erika Simon and Abby Lauber, Scholastic Award - Amanda Harmeyer with a 11.14 GPA. All-County team - Janelle Hardesty(co-MVP) and Emily Einhaus. Amanda Harmeyer - Mental Attitude Award.

Eagle Boys' Varsity Coach David Bradshaw issued first Varsity letters to Blake Billman, Tucker Brown, Brandon Gehl, Tyler Bradshaw, Daniel Leonetti, Coty Horn, Adam Vollmer, and Andrew Wagner. Other members were Justin Huff, Kyle Horan and Manager Ben Demaree.

The Eagle boys' season record was 16-7. Specific awards presented included: Captain Award, Assist Award, and Ripley Publishing Co. 25th Wm. "Tiny" Hunt Award - Kyle Horan, Justin Huff - MVP, Hustler Award - Adam Vollmer, Leading Rebounder - Tucker Brown, Most Improved - Brandon Gehl and Tucker Brown, Free Throw Award - Brandon Gehl, and Scholastic Award to Andrew Wagner with a 11.35 GPA. ORVC All Conference - Tucker Brown, Brandon Gehl, and Justin Huff. Kyle Horan - Mental Attitude Winner, and All County Team - Tucker Brown and Brandon Gehl.
