Osgood 'Jazz & Beyond' show will go on
Volunteers, money still needed

The Osgood Merchants Association promised a spring Jazz & Beyond show, and it intends to deliver. At a February 20 meeting, committee members Tom Greene, Geneen Ostendorf, Gayla Crowell, and Will and Adrienne Vincent followed through on their directive to come up with a cohesive plan. Will Vincent, an enthusiastic Osgood booster, began, “We have a date, April 28, where something has to happen.”

Some of the reminders of the ice and snow storms that hit the county this month are the clean up crews sawing up trees and tree limbs, people making repairs to their home, and some people who are healing from accidents caused during that time.

Women's hearts are risky business

It had to be big to keep Carol Holzer from attending the Versailles Pumpkin Show for the first time ever in her life! “I could hear the festivities, but couldn’t attend,” she noted as she remembered the year she had a quadruple heart bypass the week before the fall event that draws thousands to her hometown of Versailles where she and husband, John, reside.

Schools come together for county music festival

Music students in the area are gearing up for the Ripley County Music Festival, which will be held at the Tyson Auditorium in Versailles on Wednesday, March 7 at 6:30 p.m.

 

Snow days to be made up

At the South Ripley Community School Corporation Board of School Trustees meeting held Monday, February 19, snow day make-up was determined. At that point, students had missed five days due to weather. One make-up day was held Monday, February 19, Presidents’ Day, the others were scheduled for Good Friday, April 6, and three added to the end of the school calendar for May 22, 23, and 24. Students with religious obligations would be allowed to attend service on Good Friday without being counted absent.

Some residents without electric for days
Power mostly restored in area

What would it be like to live without electricity?
Some residents in Ripley and surrounding counties know the answer to that if only on a limited basis. After a powerful ice storm swept through the area last Tuesday into the morning hours of Wednesday, (February 13 and 14) many residents were left without power as the weight of the ice began to snap trees causing them to fall onto power lines.

Ice storm closes schools, businesses
Winter weather continues to pound area

Tree limbs and wires encased in ice took on a beautiful luster as the sun began to shine on Wednesday morning in the area. The beauty of the ice is mostly confined to those who do not have to get out and were not affected by loss of power or didn’t have a tree fall from the heavy weight of it.

Adventure group brings ideas before Versailles Town Board

All members of the Versailles Town Council were present at their regular meeting on Thursday, February 8. Joining council members, Sue Meisberger, Jim Taul and John Holzer, was Clerk-Treasurer Ted Spurlock. Town attorney Larry Eaton was not present. Minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved.

Vehicle found near Versailles is stolen from Indy
Police ask public for help

On Friday morning a report of a car fire had police responding to County road 100N, just west of Versailles. When Indiana State Police Trooper Jimmy Wells arrived, he found a vehicle in the ditch that was completely burned, but was still smoldering.

Residents who have lost funding from Grandview Cemetery near Madison, now have the chance to reclaim their losses, according to information from State Representative Dave Cheatham (D-North Vernon)

Level Two Snow Emergency declared

Just as weather forecasters predicted, heavy snow fell on Tuesday, February 6 in the tri-state area including Ripley County. The snow came fast and furious leaving motorists to combat treacherous roads in a short period of time.

Dollar General Store request granted by BZA

The Dollar General Store is another step closer to coming to Osgood. At the last meeting of the Ripley County Board of Zoning Appeals meeting, Hurley & Stewart applied for a variance from the required 57 parking spaces to 32 parking spaces for 115 Olive Street in Osgood. Their request was granted.

'The best shelter is a caring community'

That is the way Donna Huffmaster, speaking on behalf of the Ripley County Humane Society, summed up the society and its hopes for the future. “We want to get residents to support the Humane Society,” Huffmaster explained. She related that she had become involved with the shelter’s work several years ago, and that while it has made giant strides in care and adoption procedures, there is much more to be accomplished.

The Ripley County Commissioners met in regular session on Monday, January 29. Commissioners Robert Reiners, Chuck Folz and Lawrence Nickell were present. Attorney Neil Comer and County Auditor, Mary Ann McCoy were also present.

Thelma Jackson celebrates 104 years

Tuesday, January 30, marked the 104th birthday for Thelma Jackson. Along with family and friends, she celebrated her big day at the Manderley Health Care Center, where she now makes her home.

 

Sheriff Grills announces changes in the office
Familiar faces in new positions

A phone call can change the course of the day at the Sheriff’s Office and that was evidenced as Sheriff Tom Grills talked with reporters last Friday and answered calls at the same time. On his fourth week of taking office, the sheriff noted that “things are going well, busy, but well.”
