Prescription drug card available free

The new discount prescription card is now available free through Ripley County. The county signed a contract to make free prescription drug discount cards available under a program sponsored by the National Association of Counties.

Real flowers to be showcased in float design for parade

A field of flowers will be transformed this weekend when
the blooms are placed strategically on a float that will grace the Versailles Pumpkin Show Parade on Saturday.

Literally over 650 marigold plants with five different shades are growing in the field at the home of Frank and Eileen LaGreca on Farmer’s Retreat Road. The plants were started by Bill Nuhring in his greenhouse in Batesville.

Leonard Eckstein will be on probation for two years
Sunman man pays victims $265,000

It took three years to bring justice to people in Ripley County, but Prosecutor Ric Hertel said it was worth it. Leonard Eckstein of Sunman, last week paid $240,000 in restitution money. A conditional negotiated plea agreement had been arranged in the case where Eckstein was charged with five counts of criminal conversion for his role in a securities scheme that spanned several years and states.

Judge rules Schuerman does not have to pay Rose

Last week in Jefferson Circuit Court, the final phase of a seven year legal battle for Batesville Attorney John Schuerman, came to a close. Jefferson County Circuit Court Judge Ted Todd ruled at the sentencing on September 18, that Schuerman would serve one year probation. He did not rule monetary restitution for the alleged victim Henry Rose, as was hoped by Special Prosecutor Brad Landwerlen. In the judgment of conviction and sentencing order it reads, “Although the state portrays Rose as an illiterate man, the evidence reveals him to be a shrewd business man who started a business from scratch and later sold the business for seven figures. As Mr. Rose stated, he can’t read and write, but he can figure.”

Burn ban in effect for Ripley County


When the inspector from the Indiana Department of Environmental Management inspected the sewer lagoons earlier this year, the town of Napoleon was written up for having too much grease in the lagoon. Because of this, the town passed an ordinance that all restaurants and businesses handling food would have to put in a grease trap.

Another property reassessment this year? Yes, it is possible. On October 10 at 6:00 p.m. the Indiana Department of Local Government Finance will hold a public meeting to determine whether or not Ripley County will have to be reassessed. At the Ripley County Council meeting on September 17 Auditor Mary Ann McCoy said if that happens it will cost the county thousands of dollars.

Paramedics take training to the next level

Rapid sequence intubation, advanced airways, neurotransmitters are medical terms not everyone comprehends. However, they translate into a sentence that is more widely understood, “techniques used to save a life.”

Four days last week Ripley County paramedics sat under the teaching of Charles (Chuck) Skinner, clinical educator for PHI Air Medical for the state of Texas. The veteran critical care paramedic has been in the emergency medical service for nearly 30 years and works in close connection with the Red River Medical Institute out of Keller, TX.

The bridge over Cavehill Road was a major focus of the September 9 Ripley County Commissioners meeting. Commissioner Lawrence Nickell closed the bridge last week until additional guardrails can be installed.

A Milan man has been arrested in connection with several fires that occurred last Thursday, September 6.

Batesville teen faces several felony charges

A two-day crime spree last week has landed a Batesville student in a juvenile detention center facing multiple felony charges.

Planning commission hears update on status of lawsuits

Ripley County Area Planning Commission Attorney John Ertel updated the commission at its September meeting on the status of lawsuits against zoning code violators. He explained he was amending the complaint against Dennis Richardson to include property he owns in Pierceville.

ICE takes four from county jail

Four illegal aliens were taken by immigration officials from the Ripley County Jail on Tuesday, September 4. They will be deported back to Mexico, according to Dennis Pippin, jail commander.
Pippin noted that he had received a fax a few months back from ICE (Immigrations & Customs Enforcement) saying any illegal immigrants with a D felony or higher would be deported. He noted that he faxed his booking sheets to the proper authorities.

More recently, Pippin was in correspondence with ICE and was told any illegal alien would be deported, regardless of the charge.

Tax expert meets with county officials

On August 30 Ripley County Farm Bureau held a seminar conducted by Ms. Katrina Hall, the Tax Specialist for Indiana Farm Bureau, Inc. Hall served for ten years on the Indiana State Board of Tax Commissioners and is respected as the leading tax expert in Indiana.

The meeting, held at the Osgood Grub Co., was for selected Ripley County officials. Hall presented a review of the New Local Option Income Tax. This program has been offered to all counties but only eight have adopted the program because the deadline of July 31 did not give counties enough time to understand the options. The governor has now extended the deadline to the end of the year.

 

Enrollment up at Milan schools

Superintendent Andrew Jackson reported to the Milan School Board the present enrollment stands at 1,325. He noted this was an increase of 36 students over last year at this time. He stated the biggest change was due to full-day kindergarten, which was going very well. Jackson expressed his appreciation to Principal Jane Rogers and her staff for getting this program off to a very good start.
Roselyn McKittrick was concerned with school board members obtaining school insurance. President David Voss said the board is studying the matter to see if they could do something different that would not be so costly to taxpayers. He commented the board would look into the situation and attempt to have a resolution at the September meeting.

History has been preserved with the restoration of a Diamond Iron Works crusher taking its place at the entrance of Hanson Aggregates quarry just south of Versailles on US 421.

BZA says remove vehicles, then request will be granted

Judy Kincer appealed to the Ripley County Board of Zoning Appeals at their August meeting to place a temporary mobile home near her ailing mother. The location is Lot #1 in the Burn’s Agricultural Subdivision at 7649 N. State Road 101 in Milan. The three-acre lot is in Franklin Township.

Property taxes can be appealed

Although the deadline for spring taxes has come and gone, property taxpayers can still file an appeal if they feel they were given an unfair bill to pay.

According to information from Ripley County Assessor Shawna Bushhorn, about 180 appeals have been filed so far this year, with about half of those already being resolved.

 

 

 


Commissioners receive print in honor of Pat Busching
Humane Society asks for funds

At the Ripley County Commissioners third meeting in July, Alvin Busching brought a print of all 92 courthouses in Indiana and gave it to the county in memory of his wife, former Auditor Pat Busching. The commissioners accepted the picture and it will hang in the courthouse outside the Auditor’s Office.

After a 13-mile pursuit S/Tpr. Jim Ponsler of the Indiana State Police, arrested Terry Lee Smith, 34, of Somerset, KY.

 

New AD welcomed at Milan School Board meeting
Milan Supt. gives kindergarten update

The Milan Board of School Trustees met in regular session at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, July 23.

Principal Richard Healy introduced David Wolferst, who was hired as athletic director. Wolferst had served as AD at Maconoquah High School for the past four years and was a native of Batesville. He will be moving to this area with his wife, Kris, and their three children.
