Jac-Cen-Del Lady Eagle, Valorie Wagner... Academically And Athletically, Always Active

Gary Franklin, Sports Writer

Over the last four years, senior JCD Lady Eagle Valorie Wagner, worked endlessly season in and season out, toward making herself and her team the best they could be.

Team sports definitely take more than one member to establish a winning team, but one person can certainly lay much of the groundwork. Unselfishly Wagner has strived to give her all both accademically and athletically.

In her chosen athletic off season's, she continues to work diligently to stay healthy and fit, honing her skills and endurance levels at every allowable opportunity.

Particularly important to this effort, is that she also maintains strong academic performances in addition to all of the sports she is involved in.

This year she was named as one of the two Ripley County Lilly Scholarship recipients. That in itself speaks volumes of her priorities off the floor as well as on.

JCD Lady Eagle Varsity Basketball Coach Scott Smith stated, "Val's Lilly Scholarship is evidence that she is a true student-athlete and that it is possible to be an outstanding athlete as well as an outstanding student. I hope young girls see her for the outstanding role-model that she is."

Some of the athletic accomplishments Wagner has amassed as a senior at JCD include: 1) Selection to the Hoosier Basketball Coaches Association Class lA East All-Star Team. 2) Named Academic All-State as one of an elite group of 25 statewide. 3) Selected as a Ripley County Girls Team All-Star in the Ripley County Voiture 1047, 40 and 8 All-Star game. 4) State Finalist in the Wendy's High School Heisman selection. 5) Selected Academic All-State by IGSCA. 6) Named a Hoosier Basketball Magazine '09 All-State Honorable Mention. 7) '09 Basketball Ohio River Valley Conference Mental Attitude Award Winner. 8) National Semi-Finalist in the SAMMY (Got Milk Award), 9) Selected as a IHSAA/Ripley County Tobacco Prevention and Cessation Program Poster Role Model 10) Ripley Publishing Co. Inc. "Girls Basketball Excellence Award Winner". 11) Ranked fourth in state as "Steal Leader" stats for '08-'09

Other awards earned include: 1) '08 All-Ripley County Basketball Tournament Team. 2) '09 All-Ripley County Basketball Tournament Team. 3) '07 All-Sectional Basketball Team. 4) '08 All-Sectional Basketball Tournament Team. 5) '09 All-Sectional Basketball Tournament Team. 6) '09 All-Ohio River Valley Conference Basketball Team.

JCDHS honors and awards include: 1) The reigning season and career "Steal Leader". 2) In top 15 or better in six career &/or season categories in JCDHS basketball. 3) Has won 15 HS Letters at JCD. 4) State Finalist in Track in '06 and '08, and is participating this year as well. 5) All ORVC in Track & Field in '06, '07, '08 and likely '09. 6) All ORVC in Softball in '07 and '08, also likely in '09. 7) JCDHS record holder in Track & Field 100 M Dash, 200 M Dash and the Long Jump. 8) Ranks #1 in class academically.

JCDHS Varsity Girls Basketball Coach Scott Smith stated, "It is so rare to find someone with the combination of athleticism, intelligence, work-ethic and spirit. It is even rarer to find these qualities in a teenager, and that is what makes Val special.

She not only works tirelessly to become the best she can be in everything, she has incredible ability to inspire everyone around her to strive for the best as well. The fact that she can accomplish everything she has in the 'me' centered society we live in, while always focusing on team achievement first is truly remarkable. She deserves every recognition she gets and more, in my opinion."

Valorie "Val" Wagner is the daughter of Dennis and Flora Wagner. She has a younger sister Becca and a younger brother Austin.

In Val's senior basketball program profile, she recognized her parents as her model. Her advice for underclassmen: "There are some things you can't take with you like time and fouls, so use them while you have them."

Ripley County girls sports fans will indeed find a vacancy with the graduation of Valorie Wagner, and we at Ripley Publishing wish her the very best in all her future endeavors!
