Gary Franklin, Sports Writer
Friday evening, August 7, was for Milan football
enthusiast, the marking of the 3rd annual Black/Gold player
& coach introductions and inter squad scrimmages for teams
from grades K-12.
Beginning at approximately 5:30 p.m., the showcasing of players
and coaches followed a brief celebratory ribbon cutting ceremony
in recognition of the recently completed MHS football field
rennovation.
Once the ribbon cutting was officially behind them, the evenings
field entertainment began with the "C" Team, (ages
5-7).
Each team, black, then gold, was given the opportunity to
run ten consecutive offensive plays, with the "B"
and "A" teams following suit as their turn on the
field came around.
Progressing from the youngest players upward, the seventh
and eighth grade players took to the field for their inner
squad action, culminating with action by the MHS varsity.
The tribe proudly hits the field this season with not only
a newly renovated football field with newly laid sod and a
sprinkler system installed, but with strong desire and determination
to make this a triumphant year in victory performances as
well as enjoy the return of thirteen seniors to the squad.
A beautiful summer evening with temperatures in the upper
70's, a slight breeze and often overcast skies allowed fans
to enjoy the specialness of the evening.
Announcing from the booth, Marty Layden acknowledged the fine
work done prior to the field's opening in marking the field
by line crew Chris Schmaltz and Charlie Baylor.
The tribe travels to Eastern (Pekin) for a scrimmage on Friday,
August 14 with a 7 p.m. kickoff, then return home for their
MHS hosted season opening game against Northeastern on Friday,
August 21 @ 7 p.m.
