Residents warned of scam

ISP at Versailles are warning area residents of yet another scam. Last week a man described as a white male in his 20's, approx. 5'8", slender build, clean cut, with a "pretty white smile" and wearing a ball cap approached a residence in Rip. Co. owned by an elderly widow. He explained to the victim he was doing some tree trimming for a neighbor and wanted the victim to show him the property line so he would not cut any of her trees by mistake. While the victim and suspect were in the backyard an accomplice entered the residence and stole jewelry and money from the victim

Investigators believe the suspect had an accomplice in his vehicle and was signaled by the suspect when it was clear to enter the home. The suspect then kept the victim outside long enough for the accomplice to remove the items from inside the residence and then leave.

Area residents are warned to be aware of this scam. If approached, residents are urged to lock all doors and windows and if possible, try to get a description and license plat number of the vehicle operated by the suspect.

Anyone with information regarding this incident or other suspicious activity is urged to contact the ISP at (812) 689-5000.
