New Milan branch library projected to be open in March

The members of the Osgood Public Library board received a progress report on the construction of the new Milan branch at the meeting held December 15. According to project supervisor Gary Johnson, Bruns-Gutzwiller Construction has done “a really nice job.”

Two board positions open for Milan park

At the December 14 Milan Town Council meeting it was announced that there are currently two board positions that will need to be filled on the park board. The announcement was made by Angela Beck, Milan park board president.

 

RSRF grants $218,261


The Rising Sun Regional Foundation awarded $218,261 in 15 new grants on December 8. These grants include:

• $25,000 to the Historic Hoosier Hills RC&D Council toward the Southeastern Indiana Historic Film Project - a proposed documentary film about the history, heritage, and future of Ohio, Ripley, Dearborn and Switzerland counties, in preparation of Indiana’s Bicentennial in 2016.

Jefferson County Sheriff Deputy Roy B. (Bruce) Sutton Jr., 33, was laid to rest last Thursday, December 17 with full honors conducted by the Fraternal Order of Police Memorial Team and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department..

3 arrested on drug charges after search warrant served

According to information from Lt. Randy Holt of the Ripley County Sheriff’s Office, a search warrant for illegal drugs at a Pierceville area home, resulted in three arrests with charges pending for possession of marijuana, drug paraphernalia and controlled substances.

Drug dealer found guilty

It took a jury less than an hour to convict Steven L. Cotton, 39 of University Park, IL, on a felony drug charge that could land him in prison for up to 50 years.

Community leaders come together for babies

Monday morning, December 14 State Representative Cleo Duncan was at the Ripley County Courthouse on the first leg of her “No Questions Asked” press conference to increase public awareness of Indiana’s Safe Haven Law.

The Safe Haven Law means a distressed parent can give up an unwanted infant safely, legally and confidentially.

Officers installed for Republican Women's Club

Ripley County Republicans gathered at the Holton Community Building for their December meeting and the installation of officers for the women’s club.

County Chair Ginger Bradford emceed the event where Earline Copeland was installed as president; Janice Reiners as first vice-president; and Amber May, secretary; and Carla Miller as treasurer for the 2010-2011 year.

Fiery crash leaves Milan teen critical

An early morning crash on Sunday, December 13 has left a Milan teen in critical condition according to Lt. Randy Holt of the Ripley County Sheriff’s Office.

Police responded to a 911 report of a single vehicle accident involving injuries about 12:04 a.m. on County Road 225 East, near Delaware.

Jefferson County deputy, former Ripley County resident killed

The death of a Jefferson County Sheriff’s Deputy has hit the Ripley County community hard as news of the former resident being killed was heard.

A one vehicle crash claimed the life of Deputy Roy B. (Bruce) Sutton, Jr., 33, of Hanover Friday, December 11. According to information from Sgt. Noel Houze of the Indiana State Police, Deputy Sutton was responding to a domestic dispute involving weapons on Dugan Hollow Road when the accident occurred.

“There are no words to describe it,” Joe Day said of the love and appreciation the community poured out as they worked together to get his massive Christmas light display set up this weekend at his Versailles home.

Day, who was diagnosed with lung cancer, and has been undergoing chemotherapy, was not able to put together his display located at the Intersection of US 421 and US 50 that has become a family tradition for thousands of people for the past 32 years.

Helping youth is focus of group

Recently the Ripley County faith community teamed up with the ASAP (Association for Substance Abuse Prevention) Center and Indiana Youth Institute to celebrate the completion of a two-year-long asset building training series. This was held at the Church on the Rock in Batesville.

CI Family Worship Center advertised a free sale in The Versailles Republican recently. Typically, a sale means a good deal, but a free sale?

It meant exactly what was advertised with everything given away - free- no strings attached.

 

Volunteers needed to help light up the 'Y'



A group of volunteers, under the leadership of Bill McDonald is coming together this Saturday, December 12 at 8 a.m. to help erect the Joe Day light display located at US 50 and US 421 in Versailles.

With a little, or in this case a lot, of help from the community, plans are to light up the Joe Day residence this weekend.

First reports in the Osgood Journal before Thanksgiving indicated that due to Day’s diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer, he would not be having his spectacular light display the community has grown accustomed to for the past 32 years in Versailles. He told the Osgood Journal he just wasn’t able to do it.

Those living in the Jac-Cen-Del Community School district were given an opportunity to learn more about the proposed renovation project for the elementary and high schools in a special meeting held on Tuesday, December 1.

Fire destroys nostalgic barn

As David Koger sadly watched firefighters deal with the fire that consumed his barn, he reminisced about how it came to be on the property at 3349 W US 50, Holton.

Holton firemen were called to the scene before 7 a.m. Sunday, December 6 where they found the barn total engulfed. They were assisted at the scene by Versailles and Osgood fire departments.

Commissioners hear request for new building
Probation officer raises safety concerns

The Ripley County Probation Office is in need of a new location, according to Shannon Schmaltz, director. His request to consider the purchase of a new building was made at the regular commissioner meeting on Monday, November 30.

According to Schmaltz, the office has been at its current location at 102 W. 1st NorthStreet, Versailles, for 11 years and is now causing health and safety issues for the nine employees.

Economy woes hits local shelter hard

With the economy downturn, pets are often put on a back burner as families struggle to keep their heads above water.

Often pets are left behind as homes are lost in the mortgage crisis, or simply abandoned along the roadways as people find buying pet food and vaccinations too expensive. Recently, some dogs were dumped over the fence at the Ripley County Humane Society, which is illegal.

Local WWII veterans honored in book

The project of publishing 'Lest We Forget', a tribute to World War II veterans of Ripley County was a personal mission for the authors, Norris and Joan Krall of Osgood. “We wanted a permanent record for generations to come and there wasn’t anything like this,” the Kralls told The Versailles Republican, when they first began the project more than two years ago.
