SEI Data's Homepage

Create a Homepage with Netscape HTML Editor

Create/Edit & Publish Your Homepage in 30 minutes or Less...

This tutorial is designed for those with accounts on SEI Data. It steps you through the process of creating a homepage and publishing it online. Although Windows 3.X users will be able to create homepages, the publish feature will not work well for them and they will require a regular FTP program. Win95 users and Macintosh users should name their files with an extension of "html" and not "htm".

Before you begin you must download and install Netscape Navigator Gold 3.0.1. If you purchased the preconfigured Netscape from SEI Data or one of its distributors then you only need download the software and install it, there is no need to go through the registration and setup procedures again..

  1. Ready to start a homepage then the first thing you need to do is create your public_html subdirectory in your personal directory on SEI Data.
Start here to make your directory and empty index.html files.
After you have done this you are ready to begin creating your own page.

  2. Start Netscape Gold Browser
  3. Click File, click Open Location
  4. Type
    www.seidata.com/~city/template.html
    into the Open Location box
Note that ~ (the tilde character) must precede city.
  5. Click File then click Edit Document
  6. Notice that your browser has opened a new window. It looks similar to the browser except it has editing icons at the top and a red line signifying this as your editing station.
  7. A query box will ask you to save the current document locally in order to work on it (edit/create). Answer this affirmatively.
  8. Another query box will remind you that you are about to save a document that you may or may not have the right to copy (copyright rules). This is only a warning. Just say OK.
  9. A "Save As" box will appear. Choose the drive and directory that you wish to save the file in. Save the file as index.html
You will have to save the file as index.htm if you are using Windows 3.X
  10. Now you have a copy of the html page that you want to edit. This copy is saved locally on your computer and any changes you make and save will ONLY be saved to the local copy. The actual page won't be altered on the web until you go through the "Publish" portion of this tutorial, so feel free to 'get to know' the editing functions (try everything...it's fun).
  11. Make changes and create a document as you would in Microsoft Word
  12. When satisfied click File, then click Save
  13. Type
    index.html
    into the File Name box
  14. Click OK or Save
  15. Click Options, then click Editor Preferences
  16. Enter your real name in the Author name box
  17. Select the Publish tab
  18. Type
    ftp://seidata.com/home/your_user_name/public_html/
into the Publish to (FTP or HTTP) box
Be sure to put your own user name into the line in place of your_user_name.
  19. Enter your username in the User name box
  20. Enter your password in the Password box
  21. Click OK
  22. Click File, then click Publish
  23. A Publish Files box pops up. Enter your actual password in the Password box and select Save password.
  24. Click OK
  25. If you get an error, you made a mistake on #'s 13 - 24. Try it again.
  26. If you get a Your file (s) were uploaded successfully box, you did good.
