Part Two
The lightning lit up the night sky. Adam's eyes drifted down to the dingy streets of the city, as the rain dripped off of his fedora and down his black raincoat. The rain slicked the oily streets. At least the hotels were cheap in this part of town.
The rain was conductive to Adam's thoughts. He hated fighting with her. Perhaps she was right, but what else could he do? The only thing he really knew how to do was what she wanted him to stop doing. Going straight. The best he could hope for was ten years in jail. Ten years. He couldn't make her wait that long for him. And he would die without her. Die. Maybe there was something he could do........
Twenty-five minutes ago.
"You'd better go. You know you can't miss the end of this story," Adam said.
Charles got up and walked out. The priest walked in to say a few last words to Adam. Adam smiled, "No thanks, father. Either God is with me, or he won't be. Either way, it ends soon."
Sixteen minute ago.
"Damn," Adam thought, "I asked that she not come. I should have known that she would find her way in." Adam adjusted his position in the chair. "What if she does something?" Adam thought.
Adam focused on his mantra as the last few seconds to midnight ticked away. At the stroke of midnight, he was at peace. The executioner dropped the lever, and the electricity hit him. As the electricity overloaded his nervous system and he started to twitch, he heard the muffled sound of something hitting the glass separating the two rooms. He felt Jennifer's presence, and then he knew she would do something rash.
Fifteen minutes ago.
Adam's body gave one final twitch, and a wisp of smoke drifted up from him.
With a final sob, Jennifer suddenly turned and grabbed a gun from a startled guard's holster. Before anyone could even blink, she put the gun in her mouth. As the guard lunged for it, she pulled the trigger.
The hammer fell with a loud click as the guard grabbed it from her hands. The other guard grabbed her, preventing her from doing anything else rash. The tears fell freely from her eyes, as behind her the doctor pronounced Adam dead.
Charles looked at the people as they left. Alexander Lasker was the first to leave. Charles thought he saw the flicker of a smile on his face as he got up to leave. The other people left next, with Samuel Harden and his son Andrew drifting out next to last. Both of them were visibly saddened by the event.
Charles was next, with the guards taking Jennifer out behind him. Charles looked back down the hall at Jennifer as she was taken out. He could not remember ever seeing a woman look more broken hearted. It was as if her entire life had ended, but her body continued on beyond her.
Charles knew this story would have a definite effect on his career. Already, he was beginning to organize the story in his mind.
Now.
The guard glanced over at the body bag. The morgue guys should be here soon to haul it off. This job was always easy. He relaxed and waited. The violent cough from the bag was like a gunshot to him. He jumped back, narrowly avoiding tangling his legs up in the chair as it fell over. He drew his gun and aimed it at the bag, as the zipper tore open.
In fear, the guard fired off a shot as Adam slipped out of the bag. The bullet tore into Adam's shoulder, and Adam flung his hand out at the guard. A beam of purple light streaked out, enveloping the guard. The guard glowed a light purple, and no longer moved at all. "Ah!" Adam exclaimed as the pain hit him. He clutched his shoulder and cautiously walked over to the guard. "Don't worry, guy," he said, "You'll be moving again by morning. Now, all I have to do is get out of here......"
