The Jac-Cen-Del Eagle Soccer team of 2013 has embraced something long-time missing in programs of late, ego. Not the kind that makes a person blind with pride that can’t be backed up on the battlefield, but the kind that merits determination, effort and positivity; the kind that says you may beat me, but you will have to be having an extremely good day for that to happen because we’re not going to just lay down and roll over waving the white flag. The towel will not be thrown in until the fat lady sings her final verse, the dust settles or the sounding of the horn is no longer hearable.
Teams come along rarely, but occasionally, that have the general makeup to take adversity and work it to their advantage. This JCD Eagle soccer team appears to be one of those.
IHSAA, Sectional 57 Boys Soccer Championship
As slated, the 7 p.m. IHSAA Saturday, Oct. 12, Boys Soccer Sectional Championship game start found players from the visiting Lawrenceburg Tigers and hosting Jac-Cen-Del Eagles aligned for battle at center field.
The Eagles were quick to find positive offense on their end of the field as senior Jared Dickman connected for a goal at the 32:08 mark of the opening half.
The Eagle offense had taken several shots that just missed prior to the score but kept the Tigers on the defense for the most part in the initial action.
Leading 1-0, JCD appeared to be in a cat-fight for certain as the Tigers continued to deny more Eagle scores while attacking from their end.
Senior Eagle goalkeeper Derek Powers defended JCD's goal with continual help from his teammates until the 8:02 mark, when Tiger senior mid fielder Brycen Evans slid through JCD's defense to net a goal and knot the score at 1-1.
The score remained tied at the halftime break with the advantage looking favorable for the Tigers as they had substituted frequently through the first half throwing fresh bodies against the tiring Eagles.
Second-half action continued with the back-and-forth battle that resulted in senior Eagle Sean Lynch being taken from the game with a cut over his eye.
The Eagles continued to hold their own as a well oiled machine. Using minimal substitutions JCD prevailed to stand the test of second half action.
As the final horn sounded to end regular game action, the score remained tied at 1-1.
Two seven-minute overtime periods later resulted in no score change, forcing a shoot-out.
The five-on-five shoot-out found Lawrenceburg quickly getting a two goal advantage on the Eagles. A third miss by the Eagles spelled death, but the Tiger goalie had advanced across the defense line early, allowing a second shot by Eagle that found the back of the net, keeping JCD alive. Goalie Powers stepped it up a notch to blocked the last three Tiger attempts, while Eagle shooters blew shots past the Tiger goalie to even up the score of the first shoot-out, forcing a sudden death tie-break shoot-out.
Eagle Powers stopped the Tiger goal attempt, leading to sophomore Eagle Maverick Dwenger's opportunity to shoot for the win.
Back of the net, JCD win by a final game score of 1-0.
Heartbroken after an awesome attempt, the Tigers accepted the consolation game ball.
The Eagle seniors picked up the championship trophy and game ball from hosting athletic director, Mark Meyer, as the rest of the team and fans filled the field to enjoy the moment.
IHSAA Regional soccer action finds JCD at Switzerland County High School on Thursday evening, Oct. 17, in second game action (approx. 7 p.m.) where they will face Providence.
First Round Action
Game 1:
Lawrenceburg defeated Milan Indians 12-0.
Game 2:
JCD Eagles vs SR Raiders
Eagles won by a final count of 8-1 over the Raiders to advance to the championship match against the Lawrenceburg Tigers.
At the 21:05 mark of the second-half action, the Raiders scored a goal on senior Powers.
For the last 20 minutes of the contest, Mason Powers took over the Eagle goalkeeper duties and all JV players were entered into action for Jones to a final winning score of 8-1.

JCD’s overall record including sectional championship victory stands at 13-2-3 with an ORVC conference record of 9-0-3.
