Too much blue curtails Eagles Regional Baseball Championship hopes

Saturday, June 7, was a long day for the 2014 IHSAA Class 1A Sectional #60 Champion Jac-Cen-Del Eagle Baseball Team, led by Head Coach David Bradshaw. After walking their way through the Sectional #60 competition with no runs scored against them in three outings, the scheduled JCDHS graduation exercises would add one more obstacle to the team’s challenge to advance from following Regional #15 Championship action hosted at Morristown High School.
Meeting at a little after 7 a.m., the long day for the Eagles’ team began as the they loaded on mini buses to head to their battle slated for a 10 a.m. opening pitch against Indianapolis Lutheran.

The championship game would not begin until 7 p.m. that evening; however, the JCDHS graduation, which was also held on Saturday, forced the diversion from enjoying their victory, to that of hastily returning home to prepare for graduation ceremonies at 2 p.m. Shortly after 4 p.m. the team then rallied to refocus back to the chore at hand, a Regional Championship battle, after another long ride back to Morristown HS where they would face Shakamak.

Senior Dominique Norman drew the mound duties for the Regional championship game on Saturday evening and junior Allen Hooton fielded the catcher position. Senior Alex Schoettmer played first base, as he had pitched the morning game against Indy Lutheran. Junior Ethan Adams manned second base, senior Trey Brown handled third base duties and sophomore Tyler Huff was the shortstop. Left field was covered by sophomore Blake Straub. Center field duties were assigned to freshman Reuben Benham with responsibilities in right field handled by Bradley Davis.

Coach Bradshaw and the Eagles season ended at 20-8 overall, 10-2 conference and 4-1 in post season action.

Morning game at 10 a.m.
For much of the game, it appeared the Eagles may go four games deep into extended season action without allowing their competitors to score; however, Indy Lutheran managed to put a pair of runs on the board in the sixth before JCD shut their drive down for the 5-2 victory, earning a spot in the Regional championship game slated for a 7 p.m. opening pitch.

Pitching by the Eagles
Opening from the mound for the Jac-Cen-Del Eagles was senior hurler Alex Schoettmer. Schoettmer went the full seven innings, only finding a slight hiccup in his game flow during the Indy Lutheran sixth inning at bat where two runs were scored.

Opening on the mound for the Jac-Cen-Del Eagles during the championship contest was senior hurler Dominique Norman. Norman went 5-2/3 innings, with junior Ethan Adams being called upon to get the final Shakamak out in the bottom of the sixth. Ethan Adams in relief, pitched to two batters, allowed no runs on one hit before throwing a strike out on one of them to close the inning out.
