Jeff Greiwe reports on recent Redlegs progress
2015 tryout dates announced

The Redlegs Baseball Club participated in the June 21-22 USSSA 13U State Tournament over the weekend. Game one on Saturday featured the Redlegs against the South Bend Finnies, with the Finnies coming out on top 7-2. Seth Wilkerson (Columbus) and Aaron Greiwe (South Ripley) each knocked in a run for the Redlegs.

Game two saw the Redlegs take on the Indiana Aces. This time the Redlegs tasted victory, though it took a dramatic comeback. Despite taking a 7-2 lead into the last inning, the Aces rallied to grab a 8-7 lead. The Redlegs, taking advantage of having the last at-bat, produced a rally of their own, with Madison’s Cooper Yancey lacing a two-run game winning single to result in a 9-8 victory.

Sunday began elimination play and the Redlegs faced off against the Indiana Arabians. Thanks to an outstanding pitching performance from North Decatur's Tyler Walterman, the Redlegs cruised to a 9-3 win. Walterman pitched all 6 innings, allowing only one earned run while striking out 6. Yancey and Wilkerson each had two hits and two RBI.

The win advanced the Redlegs to a match-up with the number one seeded Terre Haute Heat, in what turned out to be the game of the tournament. The Redlegs fell in defeat 1-0 in extra innings. Noah Rutan (Columbus) dominated the Heat for 6 and 1/3 innings, surrendering only two hits while striking out 13; however, the offense couldn’t generate any run support, finally falling on a bloop single in the bottom of the eighth inning.

The Redlegs at 24-9 on the season, with a Game Day USA tourney in Columbus up next.

The Redlegs will conduct 2015, 14U tryouts on Saturday, July 26 and Thursday, July 30, both in Scipio. Please contact Jeff Greiwe at 593-3693 if interested.
