Governor’s Cup slips away during 64th Annual Madison Regatta race

Gary Franklin
SPORTS EDITOR

The Madison Regatta can now boast its 64th year of hosting sanctioned boat races and over a 100 years of boat racing history in the City of Madison. The all-volunteer organization comes together to put on a show that is one-of-kind, to be enjoyed by everyone. The annual event held July 4-6 included boat races, air shows, live music, fireworks, and vendors with great food and unique products to ensure something for the entire family.

The main event, The Governors Cup, as the grand finale unfortunately slipped away from the hometown’s Oberto/Miss Madison, piloted by new driver Jimmy Shane, after dominating performances in heat races. After grasping top-qualifier points on Saturday, he sped to victories in all three of his heat races; however, as often is the case when everything seems to be going too perfectly, he left early in the final race for the Governors Cup and penalized one lap.

A disheartened Shane had to settle for the fourth place finish due to the infraction, while J. Michael Kelly sped the U-1 Graham Trucking entry for the checkered flag and the first place finish. John Zimmerman piloted the U-9 Spirit of Qatar/Red Dot presented by Bello’s Pizza across the finish line for second and Cal Phipps secured third place with the U-7 Graham Trucking entry. Unfortunate climax to solid performances at the least, Shane managed to leave Madison on top in points in the first race of the new H-1 Unlimited. A solid stone to build upon as the season progresses to Detroit for the APBA Gold Cup.

An invitation was also extended to those interested in becoming a member of the Regatta. Membership includes passes to all events and a vote at Regatta meetings. General questions are welcome, along with co-operation requests or business proposals, whether you need their expertise or have something to offer. It is also noted that they appreciate becoming acquainted with other individuals and groups who share their views and passion. Please, do not hesitate to contact them. Email @ yougotta@madisonregatta.com or call 812-274-0400.

Qualifications results, race results and driver point accumulations are detailed in today's The Versailles Republican.
