Mary Lillian Scott

Mary Lillian Scott, 84, of Madison, passed away on Sunday, June 29, 2014, at The Waters of Clifty Falls. She was born near Versailles on August 11, 1929, to the late John and Mildred Stevenson Hopper.

She attended school at Versailles until the family moved to Scotts Ridge near Pleasant to the farm of her mother’s uncle, James Finley Ralston, in March 1940. She continued her elementary education at the Canaan school and then attended the former Central High School on Rykers Ridge where she graduated in 1947.

She married Julian R. Scott on February 14, 1948, in Versailles and moved to the Scott farm on the China-Manville Road where she spent the rest of her life before moving to The Waters in Madison in 2012. Her husband preceded in death on April 25, 1985. She was a member of the Brushy Fork Baptist Church and later the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church before joining the Rykers Ridge Baptist church in the 1960s where she maintains her membership. She taught Sunday school for decades, starting at Mount Pleasant, teaching every age group from young children to senior citizens.

She is survived by her son, Robert Scott; daughter-in-law, Irene Mendelson; and granddaughter, Elisa Scott, all of Lake Hiawatha, N.J.; and one sister, Betty Miller of Scotts Ridge; sister-in-law, Thelma Scott Meier of Madison; and a niece, Beverly Owen of the Manville area, who lovingly provided care to her to enable her to remain on the farm and who continued that care when Mary moved to the Waters. She was preceded in death by her husband Julian; her parents; sisters Nelda Hopper Chandler and Barbara Hopper; and brother Robert W. Hopper.

Funeral services were held on Monday, July 7 at the Woodlawn-Vail Funeral Chapel, Madison. Burial was at Rykers Ridge New Cemetery. Memorials may be given to Rykers Ridge Baptist Church through the funeral home. Friends can leave online condolences at www.VailFuneralChapel.com. John R. Trifilio

John R. Trifilio, 81, of Cincinnati, Ohio, entered this life on December 20, 1932. He was the son of the late Eugene and Edna Schlenker. He was united in marriage to Arlene Popenhaus on September 14, 1957. . John died on Sunday, July 6, 2014, in Cincinnati, Ohio.

John was an Army Korean veteran. He had worked for the Cincinnati Bell Company for 30 years. During this time, he had attended the University of Cincinnati where he received his bachelor degree in business marketing. After receiving this, Cincinnati Bell appointed him the accounts manager of General Electric located in Evendale, Ohio. After retirement, he started his own business known as CDA, Inc which dealt in communications. His wife Arlene helped him run this company for 30 years. John was a Masonic member of the Columbia Lodge # 0044 F & AM located in Miami, Ohio. Special things that John enjoyed were, golfing where he had won numerous rewards. Other hobbies that he enjoyed were, bowling, along with other sports. He had a great passion for farming and also had greenhouses that he so enjoyed. His family expressed that he was a true entrepreneur! He loved life and always stayed very active. Though very busy with his business, his wife Arlene and him were able to enjoy life through traveling and various other activities

Survivors include his wife Arlene Trifilio, son Gregory Trifilio and daughter Debra Oestreicher, all of Cincinnati; brothers, Roy Trifilio of Michigan and Gene Trifilio of Cincinnati; sisters, Joan Troll and June Trifilio both of Ohio; and two grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held all in one day, Wednesday, July 9, at St. Peter’s United Church of Christ “Finks” with visitation from 11 a.m.- 1 p.m. with funeral immediately following. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Memorials may be given to the St. Peter’s Church. Arrangements are being handled by Neal’s Funeral Home, Osgood; www.nealsfueralhome.net.


Alfred Young

Alfred Young, 89, of Napoleon, passed away Monday, July 7, 2014. Arrangements are pending at Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home, Versailles.


Reba Mae Craig

Reba Mae Craig, 71, of Osgood, entered this life on August 9, 1942, in Tyner, Kentucky. She was the daughter of the late Charles Wesley and Christine Tincher Faulkner. Reba passed away on Wednesday, July 2, 2014.

She was united in marriage to Guy Lee Craig on November 11, 1966 and he survives at home. Reba was a past employee of the Dreyerhaus Nursing Home of Batesville, also the Manderley Health Care Center; and her last place of work was with Res-Care located in Versailles, where she worked as a community living instructor. Reba had been a member of the Delaware Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary and also had been an EMT with Rescue 69.

Survivors include her husband; son, Jeffrey Lee (Dawn) Craig of Westport; daughter, Melissa Lynn (Doug) Horn of Osgood; brothers, Cecil Faulkner of Campbellsburg and Leon Faulkner of Salem; sisters, Kathy (Dale) Croswait of Brookville and Patty Jo (Tony) Weber of French Lick; and five grandchildren: Christopher Craig, Zachary and Steven Snelling, Cory Craig and Cody Craig. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Gene and Larry Faulkner.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 8, at Neal’s Funeral Home, Osgood, at 11 a.m., doors will open at 9:00 a.m. Burial will be in the Mud Pike Cemetery near Osgood. Memorials may be given to the Ripley County Humane Society or Mud Pike Cemetery c/o funeral home. Arrangements are being handled by Neal’s Funeral Home, Osgood; www.nealsfuneralhome.net.
