A familiar sight during sporting events are Lori and Jeff Lewis, who follow their daughter, Milan Lady Indian senior Hannah Lewis, as she competes in her last outing as a Milan High School Lady Indians Golf team representative, during the 2014 IHSAA Girls Golf Sectional #18 Meet held at the Greensburg Country Club. Jac-Cen-Del Eagles Ally Borgman and Makayla Weber.

It has become apparent that spotting Milan Indian rusher Michael Thompson (23) is much easier than containing him. His four TD game against North Decatur Chargers has made that an obvious assumption.

South Ripley Raiders pop the cap off the Toppers at SRHS

Gary Franklin

A very long dry spell in the scoring bracket for the South Ripley Raiders boys soccer team ended abruptly but positively for Coach David Baugh, the team and their fans as second half competition played out at SRHS against the visiting Madison Shawe Hilltoppers.

Pictured left, freshman South Ripley Raider varsity soccer team goalkeeper Avery Halcomb stops an opponent’s attempted goal shot, displaying that a keeper’s job may require he keep on his toes, which doesn’t always mean he’ll be on his feet to get the job done.

Their game, as had been the case far too often this fall, found SR trailing 0-2 to the Toppers at the halftime break. Doom once again was in the air, as things had been less than promising for far too long; however, Coach Baugh called his team to huddle near the flag on his end of the field. What they discussed, what they saw, what was up their sleeve? Whatever it was the outcome of it obviously kicked the team into another gear.

Like hungry headhunters, the Raiders activated their play action for a goal. Feeling better about themselves, trailing by a single point with little time off the game clock, (BAM!) another score for the tie! Enthusiasm from the bench, on the playing field and on the sidelines grew to the force of a raging storm that had been welling up and waiting for the perfect opportunity to erupt. Like a shiny new Peterbilt hitting the asphalt for the very first time, the Raiders had caught fire and yet another score rattled the opponents net over their goal keepers head. With the 3-2 lead, one was left wondering how long they would be able to bask in the glory of having the lead. But no need to worry too long, as SR added another score to go up 4-2. Ecstatic Raiders caught unbelieving by the Hilltoppers, SR added yet one more goal to win the game 5-2 by the final whistle's sounding! Obviously, Shawe didn't lay down and let it happen, but the South Ripley Raider defenders worked stealthily to deter their efforts with an extremely strong defensive goal keeping effort by freshman Avery Halcomb. A tough loss for the Toppers and a gigantic boost for the struggling Raiders of 2014. Super effort Raiders! Good Luck!

SR Raider goals scored by:
Kaleb Riley 2 Goals
Garret Gray 2 Goals
Derek Turner 1 Goal

Goal assists were recorded by Raiders:
Chase Samples 1 Assist
Derek Turner 4 Assists
Defending in goal for the South Ripley Raiders was freshman Avery Halcomb.
