Annual Firecracker Special Horse Show

The Firecracker Special Horse Show is held annually the first weekend of July. The two-day event opened on Saturday at the Decatur County Fairgrounds horse facility in Greensburg and concluded on Sunday in Osgood at the Ripley County Fairgrounds where it is sponsored by the Ripley Wranglers 4-H Club.

Pictured left, Jessie Minneman of Milan is all smiles as she competed on “I’m a Chocolate Jewel” to overall top scorer in the 2014 annual Firecracker Special on Sunday, July 6, at the Ripley County Fairgrounds in Osgood.

Many competitors and club members arrived early to begin working their horses. Not surprising, Jessie Minneman was found early working her horse in the arena. Her dedication and hard work over the years earned her the overall top points scorer for the event.

The event is open to many different classes based on horse gender, breed, age, and exhibitor’s age as well. Sunday’s first event got off near the 9 a.m. mark, with competitions running to nearly 6 p.m. Thirty-eight classes were posted (36 used) having at least one exhibitor to as many as 20+. Many 4-H members take advantage of the show, as it is so near to the time for the Ripley County Fair, working as a testing ground for their fair exhibition. Many parents worked the event while their children were competing, continuing to keep the enthusiasm alive for younger ones coming on. Add to that also former 4-H members that return in support as well, even though not competing currently.

The Firecracker Special Horse Show classes began with seven halter classes before the eighth and final halter class which was designated as the “Grand and Reserve Grand Champion Halter Class” where the top two place earning entries in each of the first seven classes were eligible to compete. Judged the Grand Champion was Shelby Pearson (236) with “Getin’ The Goods” while Kobe “I’m a Chocolate Jewel” shown by Jessie Minneman (199) claimed Reserve Grand Champion.

Each set of classes open with a $100 Open Class. Showmanship was no different. Class 14 was designated Select Showmanship, with Andrea Allen (480) on “Ima Radical Zipper” capturing the top honor, while Janice Viel finished second on “Terrific Bobbi.” Open English Walk/Trot was followed by the $100 Hunter Under Saddle competition. Leadline, Walk/Trot Select Walk Trot, Jr. Horse 5 & Under Western Pleasure, Pony Western Pleasure, the $100 Youth Western Pleasure, and the $100 Adult Western Pleasure along with three classes of Horsemanship led to the Open Trail Class 38 and the conclusion of the event.
