South Ripley Lady Raiders varsity opens 2015 RCT in blowout win over hosting Milan Lady Indians
Batesville Lady Bulldogs follow with upset victory over Jac-Cen-Del Lady Eagles

An evening of varsity girls basketball that was highlighted with the word “UGLY,” but as SR Lady Raider Head Coach Kevin Mack put it, ugly still counts as a “W” when you are ahead at the final horn’s sounding.

Game 1

South Ripley annihilated the hosting Milan Lady Indians in the RCT opener by a score of 61-32, advancing to championship on Friday night.

Following a terrible start that found them trailing by as many as 19, (12-31) to the Lady Bulldogs, JCD’s Lady Eagle junior Hayley Bruns (42), pictured left, FT connection knots the game at 56 with just 9.9 ticks remaining. Senior Jenna Hughes (12) and teammates await the outcome.

As has become the “true to form,” SR Lady Raider senior Hayley Schwarte (5) carried the biggest load for her team with a 24 point outing. Likewise in kind, Lady Indian senior Grace Herzog led her Tribe teammates with an 18 point production. Lady Raider freshman Toria Tucker (45) was the only other player to attain double digits scoring for the game with her deposit of 14. The Lady Raiders emptied the bench with 1:11 remaining in the final period of play, resulting in a FG score by sophomore Hannah Schwarte (45).

Game 2

JCD vs. Batesville

The truly anticipated hot game of the 2015 Girls RCT opening night’s ticket was a rematch between the Batesville Lady Bulldogs and the Jac-Cen-Del Lady Eagles (of which JCD had earned a two point victory at BHS earlier in the season).
This contest was so far out of whack one could not have possibly anticipated the action that took place. One comment a die-hard Batesville fan made in leaving: “I believe that was the worst officiated game I have ever witnessed in my life.” That being one thought put out there, the two teams were knotted at nine after the first quarter’s horn sounded. My thought was more to the idea that “UGLY” had begun to put her mark on the second game as it had the first, as neither team performed to any kind of expectation. The second period found JCD lost “literally” as they could not score anything except an assessed foul on a pretty regular basis. Drives for scores were recanted by the whistle for other violations on the court. A play and a foul came to be the order of the game’s progression for most of the contest. Be that all as one present can describe in their own evaluation, it resulted in the final quarter of play action to be a barn-burning pace with JCD coming back from an earlier deficit of 19 to knot the game at 56 with the one of two FT connections by Lady Eagle junior Hayley Bruns (42) with the regulation time left at less than 10 seconds. An inbound play found freshman Lady Bulldog Gabi Garcia (3) driving the length of the court and scoring a lay up (for two of her five point total contribution for the game) for the two point eventual victory at 58-56. Jac-Cen-Del had one shot to knot, the game as the shot would certainly be taken from beyond the three point line with just 3.7 seconds remaining. A poorly executed out-of-bounds play by the Lady Eagles left all chances of the comeback victory gone.
