South Ripley Lady Raiders trail visiting Rising Sun Lady Shiners, then battle to victory in last quarter action!

Gary Franklin
SPORTS EDITOR

A regular season game between the hosting South Ripley Lady Raiders and visiting Rising Sun Lady Shiners was battled out on Wednesday evening, January 14, at SRHS, where SR was the victor of both JV and varsity action; however, the varsity game was a somewhat unexpected uphill battle from the opening center court tip, where RS battled to hold on to the lead for most of the contest.

Varsity action, pictured above, finds Rising Sun Lady Shiner Lucy Carrigan (12) driving to the basket from the left side of the lane against South Ripley Lady Raider freshmen defenders Toria Tucker (43) and Kiley Sparks (23) with RS Lady Shiner junior Carson Blackwell (41) rushing in for a possible rebounding opportunity. The excellent block by Tucker was whistled a foul and sent Carrigan to the charity stripe.

Another up-and-coming freshman, Lucy Carrigan (12), displayed her prowess at South Ripley as she rocked and rolled to a 16 point outing against the South Ripley Raiders varsity. Fortunately for the South Ripley Lady Raiders, they have reliable senior producer Hayley Schwarte (5), who scored 19 to keep pace with Carrigan’s hot hand. Rising Sun Lady Shiner junior Kelsey Romans added eight for the cause, but South Ripley Lady Raider freshman Toria Tucker (45) kept pace with her seven point delivery.

VARSITY QUARTER ONE
The game found the Shiners taking control for a 12-5 first period run when the horn sounded ending the period.

QUARTER TWO
Unable to find a cure for the Lady Shiners invasion, SR found themselves yet on the short end of the scoring meter by seven at the halftime break, 18-25.

QUARTER THREE
The Lady Raiders managed to gain some ground over the third period action but were still in the arrears by four heading for the final quarter, 29-33.

QUARTER FOUR
Out scoring the opponent to protect home turf was no longer just the hope for the Lady Raiders and Coach Mack but imperative if they were going to record the game an ORVC victory. Every play took on a new dimension, as this was indeed going to tell the tale. The Raiders finally reached the plateau to tie the score with the Shiners during the fourth period, knotting the game at 36, at the 3:32 mark. The time for action was now or never, and the Raider efforts prevailed as Raider freshman Julia Rea rose to knock down a three and gave SR their first lead at 39-36 at 2:48 remaining. Continuing over the fourth, the Shiners were only able to connect for five of six FT attempts with SR’s defense stepping up to deny any further FG scoring. On the other hand, the Lady Raiders connected on just five of 10 FT attempts, but scored three FGs and a 3 pointer to rally to a five point, 43-38 victory.
