Ted Spurlock


Ted Spurlock, 70, of Versailles, passed away at 8 a.m. on Sunday, February 8, 2015, at his home. Born June 28, 1944 in Vernon, Ted was the son of Richard N. and Virginia Cadby Spurlock. He married Patricia Ann Stark on July 18, 1965 at the Pleasant View United Methodist Church and she survives.

Ted was a 1962 graduate of the Vernon High School and a 1964 graduate of Indiana Business College. He served as the clerk treasurer for the town of Versailles for 9½ years, retiring in 1998. He also was an office manager for 12 years at the Southeastern Indiana Telephone Co-Op. He was a member of the Versailles Baptist Church in Versailles and the Cherry Park Campers of North Vernon; a founder of Ripley County Chamber of Commerce; an original member of the Rising Sun Regional Foundation Board; and a former member of the Lions Club in Ripley County. His enjoyments include golfing, playing cards, and shuffleboard.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia Spurlock of Versailles; two sons, Shannon (Connie) Spurlock of Woodstock, Georgia and Darren (Melissa) Spurlock of Hamilton, Ohio; one brother, Joe (Carol) Spurlock of North Vernon; four sisters, Carol (Don) Layman and Katie (Canden) Nelson both of North Vernon, Mary Lou Pyles of Westport, and Marcia Clarkson of Franklin; three grandchildren, Ashley Spurlock of Columbus, Nicole and Delaney Spurlock, both of Woodstock, Georgia; and one great grandchild, Adele Klare of Columbus. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Dorothy Tompkins and Betty Evelyn Spurlock.

The funeral for Ted will be 11 a.m. on Tuesday, February 10, at the Dove – Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home and Cremation Services with Rev. Mike Cantrell officiating. The visitation will be from 5 - 8 p.m. Monday, February 9, 2015, at the funeral home and one hour prior to the funeral on Tuesday. Burial will be at the Vernon Cemetery in Vernon.

Sharon K. Pettit Griggs


Sharon K. Pettit Griggs, 49, of Leitchfield, KY passed away Friday, February 6, 2015, at Norton Hospital, downtown Louisville. She was a homemaker and disabled, she attended the Little Mission Baptist Church in Icetown.

She was born December 15, 1965, in Bardstown, Kentucky the daughter of the late James R. “Jim” and Imaline Back Pettit. Her niece Kimberly Jo Estill also preceded her in death.

She is survived by two sons Patrick Trujillo of Millwood, KY and Michael Nelson of Taylorsville, IN; four daughters: Rebecca (Daryl) McGuire of Versailles, Melissa (Johnny) Griggs of Leitchfield, KY, Julie (Jacob) Brown of Ottawa, IL, Marilyn “Emily” Peterson of Versailles; 15 grandchildren; three sisters: Roberta “Robbie” (John) Peterson of Versailles, Tammy Montross of Leitchfield, KY, Opal (Kenny) Stiltz of Easton, IL; several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Christian burial services will be at 1 p.m., Wednesday, February 11, at the William R. Rust Funeral Home Chapel, 167 N. Main St. in New Haven, KY. The Rev. Warren Traylor will be officiating. Burial will be in Marshall Family Cemetery in New Haven. Visitation will be Tuesday, February 10, from 2-8 p.m, and Wednesday, February 11, from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services at the funeral home. William R. Rust Funeral Home in New Haven is in charge of arrangements.


Jeffrey Scott Harris

Jeffrey Scott Harris, 52, of Versailles, passed away Wednesday, February 4, 2015, at his home. He was born at Dayton in Kenton County, Kentucky on February 18, 1962, the son of Charles W. and Joyce Johnson Harris.

Survivors include one son, Gregory (Heather) Harris of Sydney, Ohio; two daughters, Amanda (Marcus) Roll also of Sydney, and Shannon (Rob) Goddard of Versailles; stepchildren Darrell Brewer, Angela Neeley, Bobbie Jo Callen, and Dathan Brewer; 20 grandchildren; three brothers Cecil (Sharon) Mutter of Cleves, Ohio, Darrell (Sharon) Mutter of Cincinnati, and Charles (Lynette) Harris of Dry Ridge, Kentucky; one sister Jodi Overpeck of Erlanger, Kentucky. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mr. Harris was a veteran of the US Army where he served as a Light Wheel Vehicle Mechanic with the 24th Signal Battalion. He received the Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, NCO Professional Development Ribbon, Driver and Mechanic Badge, Army Achievement Medal with four Oak Leave Clusters, Army Commendation Medal, and the Army Good Conduct Medal. In civilian life he was employed as a truck driver with Nickle’s Bakery in Cincinnati. Jeff was a member of the Norwood, Ohio Masonic Lodge.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, February 12 at 12 p.m. at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with Rev. Doug Norman and Rev. Don Buck officiating. Burial will be in the Cliff Hill Cemetery at Versailles with military graveside rites by the Versailles American Legion. Visitation will be Thursday from 10 a.m. until time of services. Memorials may be given to the Versailles American Legion in care of the funeral home.


Genevieve “Skeet” Curry


Genevieve “Skeet” Curry, 94, of North Vernon, passed away Wednesday, February 4, 2015. Funeral services were held Saturday, February 7, at Sawyer – Pickett Funeral & Cremation Service, North Vernon. Burial was be in Vernon Cemetery. Memorials may be made through the funeral home to First United Methodist Church, Jennings County Coordinating Council, Seymour Lutheran home, or to the donor’s choice. Albert E. Wallace

Albert E. Wallace, 67, of Connersville, passed away Saturday, February 7, 2015, in Fayette Regional Health System. He was born March 8, 1947 in Cincinnati, Ohio, the son of Melvin and Alberta Rush Wallace and moved as a child with his family to the Versailles area.

During the Vietnam War, he joined the U.S. Army from 1966 until 1974 and was deployed for two tours of service in Vietnam. From 1974 until 1995, he then joined the Army Reserves and was stationed at the Jefferson Proving Grounds in the Roads and Grounds Department. For seven years, he was also employed as a dump truck driver for St. John’s Trucking at North Vernon. On January 7, 1968, he was married to Linda Jo Meisberger and they lived in the Osgood area until moving to Connersville to reside with his son and daughter-in-law, Chris and Jody Wallace. Mrs. Wallace died December 20, 2011. In his leisure, he enjoyed fishing, hunting and camping. He was also and avid bingo player and enjoyed watching wrestling.

Survivors include two sons, Chris Wallace and wife, Jody of Connersville and William Wallace of Yukon, OK; 10 grandchildren; two great grandchildren; two sisters, Grace Arthur of Milan and Dorothy Wilson of Holton; a number of nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his wife, he is preceded in death by three sisters, Vickie Lovins, Bonnie Biddle and Melva Feeback.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, February 12, at Miller, Moster, Robbins Funeral Home in Connersville. Burial with military rites conducted by the Fayette County Veterans Council will be in the Little Children Home Cemetery. Evelyn Bolt

Evelyn Bolt, 80, of Osgood (Delaware), passed away Wednesday, February 4, 2015, at University Hospital, Cincinnati. Evelyn was born Monday, February 5, 1934 in Adair County, Kentucky, the daughter of Lawrence and Martha E. (Sapp) Rich. She married Cecil Bolt September 3, 1952 and he preceded her in death on June 26, 2013.

Evelyn was a retired employee of the US Shoe Co. in Osgood, and was a member of the Delaware United Methodist Church where she had been church organist over 45 years. She had also been a member of the Order of Eastern Star. Evelyn was active in her church and womens groups. She loved spending time with friends, her family and traveling in their motor home, loved her sports, and was an IU and Louisville basketball fan. She was a caregiver to many.

Evelyn is survived by sons Greg Bolt of Osgood; Jeff (Katherine) Bolt of Houston, Texas; Tim (Bonnie) Bolt of Holton; Tony (Debbie) Bolt of Osgood; daughters Denise (Harvey) Franklin of Milan; and Pam Downey of Osgood; sisters Zella Cundiff and Radine Rich both of Columbia, Kentucky, brothers Stanley Rich and Lawrence M. (Peggy) Rich both of Columbia, Kentucky and Audie Rich of Bowling Green, Kentucky; 10 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren and one on the way. Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, husband, four sisters, three brothers, two grandchildren, and son-in law Merrill Downey.

Funeral services were held Monday, February 9, at Laws-Carr-Moore Funeral Home, Milan with Pastor Tommy Beatley officiating. Burial followed in Cliff Hill Cemetery at Versailles. Bernice P. Aldred Morton McCardle, 81, of Madison, passed away Friday, February 6, 2015. John E. Mueller, husband of Sharon of Dillsboro, passed away early Monday morning, February 9, 2015, at his home following a long illness. Funeral and visitation times will be announced in Thursday’s paper. Services are pending at DeVries Funeral Home, Dillsboro.

Matthew Lee “Troll” Jones

Matthew Lee “Troll” Jones, 46, of Madison, passed away Monday, February 2, 2015, at King’s Daughters’ Hospital, Madison. He was born July 14, 1968 at Evansville, IN, the son of Arthur Lee “Dick” Jones & Wanda Jo Eaton Bennett.

Survivors include his mother, Wanda Jo Eaton Bennett of Madison; his father, Arthur Lee “Dick” Jones and his wife, Shirley of South Bend; his brother, Jeff Jones and his wife, Candy of Elkhart; his sister, Jill Humphrey and her husband, Scott of Hanover; his stepsisters, Lindsy Lee and her husband, James of Madison, Heather Bennett of Vero Beach, Florida; his aunt, Melitta Hooton of Round O, South Carolina; his nephews, Kyle and Dylan Jones and Michael Humphrey; his nieces, Santana Knotts and Michelle Humphrey; his great nieces, Alexis and Brooklynn Casey; his great nephew, Jacub Lyons; his step nieces, Jaylin, Jayda & Jayme Lee; his step nephews, Justin and Richard Blankenship; his cousins, Dana Hooton, David Hooton and Laura Hooton and Traci Miller. He was preceded in death by his stepfather, Richard Bennett, his grandparents, Jesse and Grace Eaton; Arthur and Margaret Jones.

Matthew was raised in Evansville and Elkhart. After high school he resided in Union, Michigan for approximately 15 years and the past three years in Madison. Matt had been employed with Madison Precision and Arvin Sango and had last worked as a laborer in the concrete business. He was a member of the Sons of the Madison VFW Post 1969. Matt or “Troll” as his family called him enjoyed fishing, hunting, sports and being outdoors.

Funeral services were held Saturday, February 7, at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre, Madison, with Pastor Jeff Pflug officiating.
