Grandparents Recognition Night at SRHS
South Ripley Raiders 66-21 varsity victory over Southwestern Hanover Rebels

Gary Franklin
SPORTS EDITOR

Between the JV and varsity basketball action played at SRHS on Saturday night, February 7, Raiders athletes’ grandparents were brought center court to be honored and recognized.

Quarter One
The varsity game found an unusual beginning, following SR controlling the center court tip, with height being one of the Raiders strong points, as listed at 5'4", Southwestern Hanover Rebel freshman Christian Balboa drove under the basket through the Raiders would be defenders to deliver a reverse lay-up, giving Southwestern Hanover the first points of the game for the 2-0 lead. Despite controlling the opening tip, SR trailed 0-2. A FG by Raider junior Ty Tucker (30) knotted the game. Raider junior teammate Brady Meyer (11) added a pair of FTs to take a momentary 4-2 SR lead. Rebel junior Colton Shepherd’s FG countered for a tie at four. That’s when net scorching Raider junior Larry Pickett (25) took charge of the game with a FG, added a 3 pointer, then connected on a second FG, before a Rebels score would be added, giving SR the upper hand and a seven point, 11-4 edge. The Rebels draught buster came in the form of a freshman Coleman Jones (20) 3 pointer. Raider Tucker (30) connected on one of two FT shots taken, then added a FG score. Rebel Jones countered with his second trey. Raider Meyer (11) added two more FTs and junior teammate Elijah Roepke (35) collected a steal and drove for a basket with 2 ticks remaining on the first period clock. South Ripley held an 18-10 lead headed for the second period.

Quarter Two
Raiders scoring through the second period included: junior Brady Meyer (11) with 2 FGs, Sophomore Cory Walker (5) with 2 FGs and junior Ty Tucker (30) an old-fashioned three point play addition with his successful FG/FT combination. Rebels second period scoring included a sophomore Tryston Wheatley FG and a 3 pointer and two for four FT shooting by freshman Coleman Jones (20). The score heading to the halftime break, South Ripley 29-18 for Southwestern Hanover.

Quarters Three and Four
The Raiders defense held Rebels scoring to just a FG each in both the third and fourth quarters. A FG in the third by junior Colten Shepherd (11) and their FG score in the fourth by sophomore Jayde Ary (5). Raiders scoring in the third was the result of three Larry Pickett FGs, a Brady Meyer FG and two FT connections, Ty Tucker’s contribution of three FGs, one with the extra point FT connection added, a pair of Elijah Roepke FGs, a Kaleb Riley FG and a Cory Walker FG taking SR to the fourth. Points added by SR in the fourth included a Kaleb Riley FG and 3 pointer, three of four FT shooting by Ty Tucker and a FG by Brady Meyer resulting in a final count of South Ripley 66-21 over Southwestern Hanover.
