Regional run ends for South Ripley against Linton Stockton, 61-46

Gary Franklin
SPORTS EDITOR

With a phenomenal finish to their first round in the IHSAA Class 2A Boys Basketball Regional battle against the Eastern Musketeers 57-56, the South Ripley Raiders returned in the evening to the championship game against the Linton-Stockton Miners. The Raiders were the home team at Huntingburg gym, which had the Raiders insignias throughout the gym, since the Huntingburg mascot is the Raiders as well. However, soon after the center court tip, it became obvious, the morning’s glory was very unlikely to end with SR advancing. By the game’s conclusion, SR would fall in defeat to the Linton-Stockton Miners by 15, 46-61. Down by six early, Raiders junior Brady Meyer (11) FG broke the ice for 2-6. His second score pulled SR to within five at 4-9. Junior Kaleb Riley (15) connected on one of two FTs offered junior Ty Tucker scored a FG and senior Chase Samples netted a three-pointer to leave SR within four at 10-14 at the end of period one.

Quarter Two
The Miners connected to advance to a 13-point edge before Raider Tucker (30) delivered with a three-pointer. Raider Turner (10) added a FG score, Meyer a FG and Turner collected a steal and broke for a layup to pull SR to within 10, 19-29 where the score remained over the halftime break.

Quarter Three
Over the first four-plus minutes of the third period, the Miners dominated to advance their lead to 21 points at 40-19, before Raider Riley (15) scored a FG. Over the remainder of the third, SR scoring was result of Tucker’s (30) 2 FT scores, a Meyer (11) FG and three-pointer and a Riley (15) three-point delivery just before the horn sounded, leaving them a 17 point deficit at 31-48.

Quarter Four

With nearly five minutes to go in the game, Raider senior Chase Samples (33) found the bottom of the net with a three-pointer. Junior Elijah Roepke (35) rose to connect for a three-pointer near the 4:30 mark with a Riley (15) three-point delivery following to pull SR to within 10 at 40-50. Unfortunately, for the Raiders faithful, that would be as close to a comeback as it would get. Over the remaining time, SR scoring came from junior Meyer (11) with a pair of FT connections, a sophomore Cory Walker 3 pointer and a one of two FT connections by junior Larry Pickett with the game ending, SR 46 LS 61. The 2014-15 ORVC Champion’s season came to a halt.
