Gordon E. Thompson
Mr. Gordon E. Thompson, 95, of Knoxville, Illinois, died at 1:10 p.m., Friday, April 17, 2015, at Heartland Health Care Center, surrounded by loving family members.
He was born August 26, 1919, in rural Elmwood, the son of George Samuel Thompson and Bertha Graham Thompson. He had three brothers: Paul Thompson of Hanna City, Sidney Thompson of Elmwood, and John Thompson of Smithfield, Rhode Island. Gordon graduated from Elmwood High School in 1937, and from the University of Illinois in 1941 with honors. Gordon married Doris Lee Ellison on July 9, 1950, in Decatur, Illinois. They enjoyed 62 years of blessed marriage; however, Lee preceded him in death on December 28, 2012.
He is survived by three sons: Rev. David B. (Kyle) Thompson of Greensburg, Indiana; Dana E. (Carol) Thompson of Elgin, Illinois; and Donald P. (Marcia) Thompson of South Elgin, Illinois; and three daughters: Diane R. Shea of Sullivan, Illinois; Donna M. (Greg) Mathews of Galesburg, Illinois; and Denise A. (Trace) Tucker of Versailles, Indiana.
Gordon was also blessed with 13 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren and another expected in August,
Gordon was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, his brothers, and his grandson, Tanner Lee Tucker.
Gordon enlisted in the U.S. Army in July of 1941, after graduating from the University of Illinois ROTC program, and served in active duty full-time until March 1946. He then served 25 years as a reserve officer, graduating from the Command and General Staff College Associate Course, specializing in Field Artillery. He also served as a reserve instructor for ten years. Gordon retired in 1971 with the rank of Colonel. Gordon was a past PTA president at the Mable Woolsey Elementary School. He was a College’s Dean’s Club member and member of University’s President’s Council at the University of Illinois. He was the Chairman of the College of Agriculture Class of ‘41 Alumni Committee, as well as the Chairman of Hill Hall Alumni. Gordon established family scholarship programs at both the Colleges of ACES (Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences) at the University of Illinois, as well as at Judson University (the alma mater for five of his six children).
A memorial celebration is scheduled for 11:00 am Friday, April 24, 2015, at the First Baptist Church of Galesburg. Reverend Daniel Siems and Rev. David Thompson will officiate. Visitation will be 5:00 - 7:00 pm Thursday, April 23, 2015, at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Burial will be 10:00 am Friday at the Knoxville Cemetery, with military honors. Lori Denise Callahan Turner, 48, of Madison, passed away Sunday, April 19, 2015. Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 25 at 11 a.m. at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre, Madison with burial will the Vernon Cemetery in Vernon. Visitation will be Friday, April 24 from 4-8 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home. John “Rocky” R. Philip
John “Rocky” R. Philip, 77, of Cross Plains, passed away at 7:40 p.m., Monday, April 20, 2015 at his home. He was born at Allentown, Pennsylvania on April 19, 1937, the son of John and Mildred Hess Phillip. He was married to Karen Magner on April 6, 1996 and she survives.
Other survivors include two sons, Jonathan (Lora) Philip of Cross Plains and Winston (Kim) Wilson of Minneapolis, Minnesota; four daughters, Lori (Rick) Smith and Karen (Paul) Filek both of Cross Plains, Barbara Wilson of Chillicothe, Ohio, and Crystal (David) McGuire of Dayton, Ohio; 16 grandchildren and five great grandchildren; six brothers, Dennis Philip, Jethro Hooper, Dallas Hooper, Martin (Debbie) Philip, Andrew (Pam) Philip, and Gerald (Denise) Philip; two sisters, Donna Marie (Charles) Tolle and Gwendolyn Shipley; sister-in-law, Anna Philip. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Raymond Philip.
Mr. Philip a veteran of the US Army and was an accomplished bass guitar player. He had performed in various locations and had played back up for such big names as Ray Price. He was a member of the Southeast Indiana Musicians Hall of Fame and the Cincinnati Musician’s Union. John was a driver for Catch-A-Ride in Dillsboro and was a member of the Bear Creek Baptist Church.
A celebration of John’s life will be held on Saturday, May 9 at 11 a.m. at the Bear Creek Baptist Church in Friendship with Rev. Sherman Hughes officiating. Burial will be in the St. Paul Cemetery at Dewberry. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until time of services. Memorials may be given to the Bear Creek Baptist Church in care of the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home, Versailles.
Dorothy Dilk
Dorothy Dilk, 90, of Versailles, passed away Monday, April 20, 201,5 at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in New Albany. She was born at Hazard, Kentucky on November 9, 1924, the daughter of Fred and Gladys Thomas Johnson. She was married to Nelson Dilk on December 16, 1942 and he preceded her in death on March 21, 2012.
Survivors include one daughter, Patty Campbell of Pekin; one son, Marvin Dilk of Holton; 10 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren; two sisters, Juanita Singleton of North Vernon and Kathleen (Louis) Holly of Bowling Green, Kentucky; one brother, Louis Johnson of North Vernon. She was also preceded in death by her son Eddie Dilk, grandchildren Jimmy Campbell and Christina Dilk, her brothers Stanford, Palmer, Carroll, and Donald Johnson, and her sisters Eugenia Riddle, Arveta Sutton, and Josephine Smith.
Mrs. Dilk was employed with Reliance Electric in Madison for 25 years retiring in 1986. Dorothy was a homemaker and a member of the First Southern Baptist Church in Versailles.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 25 at 10:30 a.m. at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home, Versailles, with Pastor Shane Morgan and Bro. Chris Campbell officiating. Burial will be in the Marble Corner Cemetery at Versailles. Visitation will be Friday from 5-8 p.m. Memorials may be given to the Marble Corner Cemetery in care of the funeral home.
