With Eagles 4-2 win over Indians and 2-5 loss to Shiners, Rising Sun gets title

On Friday evening, May 22, the Tribe’s chance to claim a share of the 2015 ORVC baseball title fell short with their hosting 2-4 loss to the visiting JCD Eagles.

Jac-Cen-Del’s chance to earn an outright conference title fell short of their intent during a final regular season visit to Rising Sun, where the Shiners were allowed to win by the final count of 5-2 over Eagles for at minimum a shared conference title.

Jac-Cen-Del, Milan and Rising Sun played to the end of their seasons to determine who would actually evolve the winner, resulting in Rising Sun taking advantage of their home team game status. Jac-Cen-Del’s win over hosting Milan resulted in an ORVC second place tie between the Eagles and Indians.

Extended season hopes remain alive for all three as they advance to Sectional eliminations. Even so, the Class 1A Shiners and Eagles could possibly meet yet a third time on a neutral site during the Madison Shawe hosted IHSAA Class 1A Baseball Sectional #60, pending tournament draw, wins and/or losses. Milan on the other hand seeks an extended season run via IHSAA’s Class 2A South Ripley High School hosted baseball sectional #45 where they drew action on Thursday night against the Southwestern Hanover Rebels. A win there would put them in the championship contest on Monday, June 1 at 5:30 p.m.

Lady Eagles win Class 1A Softball Sectional #60 opener at Rising Sun

Gary Franklin
SPORTS EDITOR

Coach Jake Todd’s Lady Eagles showed up in fine fashion, as they opened the Rising Sun hosted IHSAA Class 1A Girls Softball Sectional for a 5-0 victory as the home team against South Decatur Lady Cougars.

Holding the Lady Cougars scoreless in the top of the first inning, Lady Eagle Jacqlyn Menchhofer scored in JCD’s at bat in the bottom off a home run over the fence by freshman teammate pitcher Morgen Carroll. And, 2-0 and rolling on, as the Lady Eagles solid defense shut the Lady Cougars down in their second at bat then added another run for 3-0. A huge hiccup by the Eagles in base running led to a double play to take them out of what was looking to be a huge inning at bat, but the team managed to recover and put the game away with a 5-0 victory to advance to round two action.

An anticipated and expected re-appearance on Tuesday night gave way to Mother Nature’s desires, as delivery of storms and a couple inches of rain lying on the diamond near game time forced postponement to a Wednesday venue.

Opening the action on Wednesday, weather permitting, will be a game between the host Lady Shiners and Oldenburg Lady Twisters. The Lady Twisters found their long trek to Rising Sun merely an evening jaunt to the neighborhood Burger King, before returning home. Lady Twisters and Lady Shiners open the venue when action resumes with the Lady Eagles slated to play the second game against Madison Shawe Lady Hilltoppers, with the winners of the two games setting up the sectional championship venue. With a back-up of game plans, the Lady Eagles will be in battle in Rising Sun, while the Eagles baseball team will be seeking a win at the Madison Shawe hosted IHSAA Class 1A Sectional.
