Mary Ann White

On May 20, 2015, just one month shy of her 88th birthday, MaryAnn White passed away peacefully in Watsonville, CA after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s Disease.

As a native of Cross Plains, born to George Addison Smith and Amelia M. (Lomatch) Smith, MaryAnn lived with her bother Richard and sister Marion Esther until the passing of their parents at a very young age. MaryAnn and her sister, Marion Esther were lovingly taken in by Milton and Lizzie Straber and raised in the neighboring township of Napoleon. After graduating from high school, she moved to the City of Indianapolis where she met her future husband Norman H. White. They moved to California in 1955. Living in Southern California for just a short time, MaryAnn moved to Mountain View for the remainder of her years until moving to Santa Cruz County with her loving granddaughter, Tamara, in 2008. Even though she spent most of her life in California, her heart resided in Indiana. All she ever talked about was “Little Cross Plains, and Napoleon IN.” She was always proud to call herself a “Hoosier!” MaryAnn greatly enjoyed singing hymns and dancing and was a faithful member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Sunnyvale, CA. She was a secretary for Lockheed Missiles and Space until retirement.

Preceded in death by her daughter, Debra Sue (Kelly) Wales, sister Marion Esther (Smith) Glant and brother Richard Smith, MaryAnn is survived by her granddaughter, Tamara O’Kelly. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association. Tamara O’Kelly would love to hear from any distant friends or family in the area who would like to connect and share stories about the history of the Smith and Lomatch family. She can be contacted at tamara@hartmaninn.com.
