Stephen Francis Kappes

Stephen Francis Kappes, 64, of Bennington, entered into this life on March 15, 1951 in Batesville. He was the son of the late Raymond Bernard and Ethel Florentina Freel Kappes.

Stephen, most commonly known as “Bear,” grew up in Osgood and graduated from Jac-Cen-Del High School in 1971. At the age of 18, he began working for Cummins Engine Company in Columbus and later transferred to Holset Engineering Plant in Madison, where he retired after 30 years. Steve made his home in Bennington and had several hobbies. He enjoyed family events, fishing with brothers and friends, bowling and a variety of hunting, especially mushroom hunting. Farming and gardening were also among a list of his favorite things. Stephen passed away, Thursday, June 4, 2015 at The Waters in Rising Sun.

Survivors include brothers: Richard (Judy) Kappes of Holton, Norman (Connie) Kappes of Osgood, Frank (Debbie) of Fairview, John (Teresa) Kappes of Versailles; sisters: Edna Yagami of Richmond, KY, Carolyn (Wesley) Bradley of Osgood, Velma (Jerry) Armstrong of Rising Sun, Martha (Jeff) Peaslee of Versailles, Rosemary (Rick) Hooten of Osgood, Regina (Doug) West of Versailles, Debra Schmidt of Osgood, Christina (Alvin) Hoff of Sunman; sister-in-law’s: Judy Kappes of Bennington, Kathy Kappes of Greendale; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by brothers: Louis, Martin and Alvin Kappes; niece, Jennifer Kappes; nephews, Sadao Yagami, Jr., James Kappes, Jeffrey Bradley, Joseph Kappes; brother-in-law, Sadao Yagami, Sr.

Funeral services were held Monday, June 8, at St. John’s Catholic Church, Osgood with burial in the church cemetery. Memorials may be given to the donor’s choice. Neal’s Funeral Home, Osgood, was entrusted with arrangements. www.nealsfuneralhome.net.
