Greased Pig Contest big hit at Ripley Co. 4-H Fair

Gary Franklin
SPORTS EDITOR

Another tremendous number of contestants competed in the mud in front of a large crowd for the annual Ripley County 4-H Fair Greased Pig Contest. Unfortunately for competitors and spectators, this could be the last year for the contest. Some counties have had issues brought up from animal rights groups. It was gratifying to see the contest had safer means of containing the pig to determine a winner this year, as competitors merely need wrangle a pig over the edge of a tractor tire lying on its side versus the old task of wrestling the pig above a pin panel. No injuries were reported during the event for either pig or chaser. The experience shared by the multitude found all leaving the pen smiling, muddier and saddened that this could be their last opportunity to compete with their friends in the event.

Proving yet again to be good sports, while taking on responsible royalty roles of the 2015 Ripley County 4-H Fair, third runner-up, Cheyenne Kern; first runner-up, Andrea Grossman; Miss Ripley County Fair Queen Savannah Kern; second runner-up and Miss Congeniality Sierra Kern; and fourth runner-up, Sarah Boyken, open a much enjoyed Greased Pig Contest on the track in front of the grandstands.

Other Ripley County 4-H Fair activities, competitions and events will follow in upcoming issues of the Osgood Journal and The Versailles Republican.
