Shirley Ellen Summers

Shirley Ellen Summers, 85, of Osgood, was born October 14, 1929, in Osgood. Her parents were the late Clarence B. and Olive Z. VanVolkenburg Schmaltz.

Shirley graduated from Holton High School and was a lifetime member of Hopewell Baptist Church near Holton. She was a past member of the ladies Hopewell missionary and the Osgood Beautification Committee. She had last worked as a unit coordinator for Decatur County Hospital of Greensburg. Shirley’s children said she had been a wonderful mother and was known for her good cooking especially her homemade breads and sweet rolls. She loved doing crafts, especially cross stitching, playing cards and also enjoyed doing gardening. Shirley’s family and grandchildren were her greatest love in her life!

She passed away, Monday, July 27, 2015 at the Manderley Health Care Center in Osgood. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends. Survivors include sons, Denver (Mary) Summers Jr. of Osgood, Chris Summers of Ohio, Terry (Lonna) Summers of Holton, Scott (Sherri) Summers of Osgood; daughters, Sharon Summers of Osgood, Stacy (Brian) Stater of Noblesville; many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Services will be held all in one day, Saturday, August 1 at Hopewell Baptist Church, Holton, with visitation: 10 a.m.- 12 noon and funeral immediately following. Tammy D. Holman

Tammy D. Holman, 49, of Osgood, passed away at 2:10 a.m. Tuesday, July 28, 2015 at the Hospice of South Central Indiana in Columbus. She was born at Madison on September 23, 1965.

Survivors include her companion Andy Shelton; one brother Mike (Becky) Holman of Versailles; her niece Jessilyn Pickett; two nephews Blaine Holman and Anthony Holman, and her great niece Lilly Holman. She was preceded in death by her mother Darlene Holman.

Tammy was a 1983 graduate of South Ripley High School and attended Ball State University. She was a 20-year employee of Valeo in Greensburg where she worked as a master scheduler. She had also served for many years as the reserve volleyball coach at South Ripley High School and had previously worked as a cake decorator. Tammy’s hobbies included motorsports and also spending time with her family.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 31 at 10:30 a.m. at the West Fork Baptist Church with Rev. Michael Holman of the First Baptist Church of Brookville officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 5-8 p.m. at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles and on Friday from 9:30 a.m. until time of services at the church. Memorials may be given to the West Fork Cemetery or the Hospice of South Central Indiana in care of the funeral home.


Mellwood Taylor

Mellwood Taylor, 70, of Lexington, passed away Sunday, July 26, 2015. Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 30 at 11 a.m. at the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre, 325 Demaree Drive in Madison with burial in the Lexington Cemetery in Lexington. Visitation will be Thursday from 9 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to the Mellwood Taylor Memorial Fund, contribution cards are available at the funeral home. Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre, Madison, is in charge of arrangements. Betty Lee Davis

Betty Lee Davis, 80, of Batesville, passed away on Sunday, July 26, 2015. Visitation will be held Thursday, July 30 from 5-8 p.m. with funeral services at 10 a.m. on Friday, July 31 all at Meyers Funeral Home in Batesville. Burial will follow in St. Johns Church Cemetery, (Huntersville) Batesville. Memorials may be given to Cancer Research c/o of the funeral home. Meyers Funeral Home, Batesville, is in charge of arrangements.

Alma Faye Julos

Alma Faye Julos entered her heavenly home on June 13, 2015, in Anaheim, Ca., at the age of 80. Alma was a twin born on March 9, 1935 in Holton. She was one of nine siblings and the daughter of the late Abbie (Lewis) and Harry Myers.

Alma graduated from Holton High School and moved with her two daughters to Anaheim, Ca., in 1963. She worked at Kwikset and retired after 32 years. She worked part-time for Target in Garden Grove, Ca., and she was also a florist. Alma was a member of Euclid Street Baptist Church and The Garden Church, Anaheim, Ca. Alma loved all sports and competed in softball, golf and bowling. She was both an MLB Angel and Dodger fan. She enjoyed her family and participated in many sports with her late husband John Julos. Alma gave her friendship and love to all.

Alma is survived by three sisters: Marcella Oropesa, Frances Myers and twin Thelma Wilson; daughter, Deirdre (Piszek) McCollister; stepson, Jay Julos; four grandchildren, Shauna, Elise, Erin and Nick; three great grandchildren, Israel, Jacob and Zachary. Alma was predeceased by brothers Paul, Albert and Wilbur Myers; sisters Virginia Dunn, Violet Tyler; and her daughter, Abby (Piszek) Tate.

Bonnie Lou (Smith) Johnson

Bonnie Lou (Smith) Johnson, 68, of Dillsboro, passed away Saturday, July 25, 2015, at her residence. Bonnie was born in Milan on July 14, 1947, the daughter of the late Marian (Rieman) and James D. Smith.

Bonnie was raised in Ohio County and was a graduate of Rising Sun High School Class of 1965. She worked as a dietician at Dillsboro Manor, Bonnie also worked as a cook and kitchen supervisor at Frisch’s. On November 20, 1965 she married Bobby Gordon Johnson who passed away on July 7, 2011. Bonnie and Bobby were married nearly 46 years.

Survivors include her daughter, Cheryl Johnson of Dillsboro; two sons, Robert Johnson (Deanna) of Bright, and Jeffrey Johnson of Nashville, Tenn.; four brothers, David Lee Smith of Michigan; Michael Edward Smith of Dillsboro; Alan Wayne Smith of Rising Sun, and James Smith, Jr. of Rising Sun; seven grandchildren, Elliot, Molly, Natalie, Spencer, Emily, Caramia and Sienna Johnson. Bonnie was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, July 31 at the Markland Funeral Home in Rising Sun. Friends are invited to call Thursday from 5-8 p.m. at Markland Funeral Home. Dilver J. Knigga

Dilver J. Knigga, 83, of Tell City, formerly of Napoleon, passed away Wednesday, July 22, 2015 at the Oakwood Health Campus in Tell City. He was born near Dillsboro on April 29, 1932, the son of Charles and Bertha Rump Knigga. He was married to Eileen Bodenberg on August 20, 1960 and she survives.

Other survivors include three daughters, Connie (Tom) Holm of Tell City, Becky Leedy of Scottsburg, and Amy (Ray) Burton of Osgood; six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren; one sister, Esther (Leon) Berner of Cross Plains. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mr. Knigga was a 1950 graduate of Vevay High School. He had formerly worked as the office manager for the Ripley County Farm Bureau Co-op in Osgood. He also was employed for several years as a sales representative for the Thomas D. Murphy Company of Red Oak, Iowa selling promotional items to businesses. Dilver was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Olean.

Funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family with burial in St. Peters Cemetery at Olean. Memorials may be given to the St. Paul Lutheran Church or St. Peters Cemetery in care of the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles.


Dorothy M. Smith

Dorothy M. Smith, 99, of Versailles, formerly of Alexandria, Kentucky passed away at 12:40am Wednesday, July 29, 2015, at the Manderley Health Care Center in Osgood. She was born at Newport, Kentucky on July 1, 1916 the daughter of Earl and Harriett Davis Lipscomb. She was married to James Smith on September 5, 1934 and he preceded her in death on October 6, 1982.

Survivors include two sons Rev. Robert (Judy) Smith of Versailles and Thomas (Mary) Smith of Ft. Knox, Kentucky; 6 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her son James, her parents, her brothers Joe, Ben, and Harvey Lipscomb, and her sisters Velma Bickers and Ruth Lipscomb.

Mrs. Smith was a homemaker, did cleaning for several people, and had retired from the Gibson Greeting Card Company in Cincinnati. Dorothy was currently a member of the Dabney Baptist Church, but for several years belonged to the Bethel Baptist Church in Alexandria where she taught Sunday School and assisted her husband as church treasurer.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 1st at 10 a.m. at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles with her son Rev. Robert Smith officiating. Burial will be in the Wesley Chapel Cemetery at Alexandria. Visitation will be Friday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Memorials may be given to the Dabney Baptist Church in care of the funeral home.


Mary C. Rehberger


Mary C. Rehberger, 72, of Sunman, passed away Saturday, July 25, 2015. Visitation will be held Thursday, July 30, from 4-8 p.m. at Cook Rosenberger Funeral Home, 107 Vine Street, Sunman. The funeral service will be on Friday at 10 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow in St. John’s Cemetery.
