Tribesmen claim 2016 SIWC 13 team conference title

Milan Senior Jacob Cavins at 195# wrestles to his 6th consecutive undefeated SIWC Conference title

Gary Franklin
SPORTS EDITOR

Milan High School has a long tradition of wrestling team positivity under former Head Coach Roy Adams, and the current coaches are continuing that tradition. On Saturday, January 16, the Milan Indians Wrestling Team coached by Adrian Wilburn and Ron Prozanski worked their way to another Milan High School Team SIWC Conference Championship Title at Southwestern High School in Hanover. Many sports have four to eight teams to battle; this wrestling conference includes 13. Event scores reported at each of the four junctures found Milan leading by as few as 4 points and finally by 20.ßå

Since the inception the SIWC Team Title in 1984 the Milan High School Indians have been the Champions in 1991, 1996, 1997, 2000, 2001, 2006, 2007, 2010, 2013, and now again in 2016. Following the meet, each team’s coach is entitled to one vote toward naming the MVP or Outstanding Wrestler for the event. Of those years since 1984 Milan has had the honor of the following: 1984 - Duane Godie, 1985 - Chris Owens, 2003 - Darren Hess, and 2006 - Josh Yatsko. Somehow, in 2016, despite Milan High School senior wrestler Jacob Cavins at 195# and having wrestled his opponents over a six year stint at the SIWC conference event undefeated he was not named. Currently ,35-0 this season, the outstanding effort and achievement by Cavins in his SIVC career surpasses all others to reach this prestigious accomplishment. Cavins’ stretch began as a 7th grader and ran consistent through his senior season. We wish him well at Notre Dame in his college wrestling ventures after graduation from Milan High School.

The Tribe, as a team, produced three weight class champions: Jacob Cavins at 195#, John Rohrig at 182# and Tyler Wilburn at 113#. Achieving a runner-up spot in a tightly contested match was Adam Brinkman at 145#. A pair of 3rd place finishes were found in the efforts of Indians Karl Hoffrogge at 160# and teammate Logan Miles at 138#. The Tribe’s Matt McFarland managed to finish for 4th at 220#. Indians winding up the day’s conference efforts with 5th place finishes were Zack Wilburn at 113# and Dylan Myers at 138# with Justin Wickersham at 152# finishing 6th.
