Joseph Leslie Kabel

Dillsboro, passed away Thursday, October 24, 2013 at his home with his family at his side. He was born February 6, 1946 in Cincinnati, Ohio, the son of Stanley Martin Kabel and Mary Catherine (Senior) Kabel.

He graduated from Withrow High School in Cincinnati with the class of 1964, and joined the US Army. He was in the 82nd Airborne and challenged life as he had 976 skydives, to include many exhibition jumps; he holds Bench Rests shooting competition world and state records. Joe also won archery and bass fishing trophies; played keyboards professionally, and built a 1973 Corvette drag race car which has won the World of Wheels, in Indianapolis, Carl Casper, in Louisville, and Cavalcade of Customs.

Joe enjoyed boating and camping; drag racing; and spending time with family and friends. He enjoyed helping others accomplish their tasks and dreams. Joe was a fabricator-welder and dedicated employee at Holland Roofing Company for 27 years in Florence, KY.

Joe is survived by his loving wife, Marsha A. Hunt-Kabel, to whom he was married this summer on June 1, 2013. Marsha is the daughter of William and Thelma Hunt.

He is survived by his daughter: Maria Kabel, of Frankfort, KY; two sons: Tony Kabel, and his wife, Sherry, of Milford, OH, and Jason Kabel, and his wife, Erin, of Cincinnati, OH; stepchildren: Scott Crosby, and Lori Crosby, both of Cleves, OH; his eight grandchildren: Olivia Kabel, Zach Kabel, Jordan Kabel, Kyle Kabel, Ally Kabel, Abbi Kabel, Timmy Kabel, and Cayla Kabel; three step grandchildren: Gaige Crosby, Zackery Wilhoit, and Joselynn Crosby; one brother: Andy (Anna) Kabel, of Cincinnati; one sister: Marlene (Bob) LeBlond, of Louisville, KY.

Joe is also survived by his best friend, Rich Rees and the many, many dear friends that he shared his life with. Joe will be missed by many. He is now with our Lord watching over us. He won the race.

Funeral services for Joe were held Sunday, October 27, at 1 p.m. at DeVries Funeral Home in Dillsboro, with Pastor Gary Lay officiating. Interment was at Oakdale Cemetery in Dillsboro. For those who wish, memorials be be given in his memory to the Dearborn County Cancer Fund.

Betty A. Davis Shadday

Betty A. Davis Shadday, 71, of Madison, passed away Wednesday, October 23, 2013. Funeral mass was held Monday, October 28, at the Prince of Peace Catholic Church, Madison with burial in the Grandview Memorial Gardens near Madison. Loretta Sue Chatham

Loretta Sue Chatham, 64 of Milan, passed away Wednesday, October 23, 2013 at U.C. Hospital in Cincinnati. She was born Wednesday, February 9, 1949 in Cincinnati, Ohio, the daughter of Eugene and Vina Marie (Lewis) Fields. She married Dana Chatham February 5, 1973 and he survives.

Loretta was a faithful member of the Milan First Baptist Church, and was a Sunday school teacher and she belonged to the women’s church group. She loved reading her bible, going to yard sales, was a big REDS fan, and her greatest passion was her faith in the church, and taking care of the grandchildren, family, and extended families.

Loretta is survived by husband: Dana Chatham of Milan; son: D. Wade (wife Melissa) Chatham of Milan; daughters: Marla Gayle (husband Chris) Blum of Santa Cruz, CA, Vanessa Fawn (husband Fred) Poore of Milan; brothers: Eugene Fields of Indianapolis, Gerald Fields of Rushville, Kenneth (wife Donna) Fields of Bedford, Curtis Fields of Indianapolis, Oliver Fields of Indianapolis; sisters: Frieda (husband Walter) Knight of Indianapolis, Audrey Fields of Cross Plains; three grandchildren: Corwin and Carly Blum, DeLanie Weber; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers: Keith and Greg Fields.

Funeral services were held Monday, October 28 at the Milan First Baptist Church with Pastor Harris Long officiating. Burial was in the German Lutheran Cemetery north of Milan. Leah Doris Kessen

Leah Doris Kessen, 87, of Aurora, passed away Wednesday, October 23, 2013. Services will be held at Wilmington Hills Wesleyan Church, Sunday, November 3, at 3 p.m. with Rev. George Alfred Downey

George Alfred Downey, 81 of Kenansville, FL, formerly of the Dabney area in Ripley County, passed away Tuesday, October 22, 2013 at the Methodist Medical Center in Oakridge, TN. He was born September 21, 1932, the son of Harry Thomas and Agnes Belle Halberstadt Downey. He married Lillian Wells on April 9, 1992 and she survives.

George was a Korean Army Veteran and a past 32-year employee of GM Fisher Body of Marion, where he retired in 1989.
He was a member of the Elks of Kissimmee, FL, the VFW and the American Legion of St. Cloud, FL and the United Auto Workers local # 977 of Marion.

George and his wife attended the Baptist Church in Kenansville. He had a passion for gardening and also enjoyed fishing. Riding his golf cart around the neighborhood was also a favorite pastime.

Survivors include his wife, Lillian Wells Downey of Kenansville, FL; daughter, Paula K. (Steve) Henderson of Roanoke; stepsons, Kenneth Paul Baker of Xenia, OH, Brett Baker of Pleasant Hill, OH; stepdaughter, Brenda (Brad) Baker Davies of Centerville, OH; grandchild, Chaz (Elizabeth) Halsell and one future great grandchild; three step grandchildren and one step great grandchild; brothers, Bill (Elizabeth) Downey of Osgood, Paul (Alma) Downey of Anderson; brother-in-law, Sherman Lemen of Osgood; and sister, Helen (Butch) Jahnigen of Osgood.

He was preceded in death by four brothers: Charles, Gale, Hubert and Roy Downey and one sister: Jean Lemen.
Funeral services wereheld Saturday, October 26 at Neal’s Funeral Home, Osgood, with burial in the Holton Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Holton Cemetery c/o funeral home.

Mike McCarty

Mike McCarty, 45 of Zionsville, died October 19, 2013. Cremation is planned and a memorial service will be held Tuesday, October 29 at 6 p.m. at Norman Funeral Home in Hope.
