Dorothy Elaine Luke

Dorothy Elaine Luke, 85, of Dillsboro, passed away Tuesday, November 19, 2013 at Dearborn County Hospital following a long illness. Elaine was born May 9, 1928 in Wilmington, the daughter of Carl and Elma Kaiser Weseman.

She graduated from Aurora High School in the class of 1946, and was employed at Walker Laundry until she married Howard Luke on November 25, 1949. Elaine and Howard raised cattle, hogs and beef in addition to farming corn and beans. She loved to sew, and made wedding dresses and bridesmaids dresses for her daughters, in addition to sewing many clothes for her children and grandchildren.

Elaine did canning, and made many meals for the national muzzleloaders activities in Friendship. When her granddaughter, Hannah, was born, she was a great help in caring for her. She was a great caregiver for her father and father-in-law.

Elaine and Howard have been members of St. John Lutheran Church in Farmers Retreat for many years, and she was a big part of the church helping with meals and a caregiver for people.

Preceding Elaine in death were her parents; one sister, Jeanette Torkanian; and a grandson, Keith Lang.

Surviving is her husband, Howard Luke; one son, Dennis (Brenda) Luke of Holton; two daughters, Sandy (Gene) Lang of Aurora and Connie (Kenneth) Griffin of Dillsboro; five grandchildren, Amy (Geoff) Ashcraft, Jason Luke, April (Duke) Johnson, David Luke and Hannah Griffin; three great grandchildren, Madison and Elaina Ashcraft and Baby Johnson; one brother, James (Corrine) Weseman; four sisters, Marion (Clayton) Bentle, Linda Fortner, Jean Weseman and Shirley Daughtry.

Funeral services for Elaine will be Monday, November 25 at 11 a.m. at St. John Lutheran Church in Farmers Retreat. Friends may meet her family at St. John Lutheran Church on Sunday, Nov. 24, from 4-8 p.m. Memorials may be given in her memory to St. John Lutheran Church Renovation Fund or to the Dillsboro Civic Club. Arrangements are entrusted to DeVries Funeral Home in Dillsboro.

Dale Fremond Lotshaw

Dale Fremond Lotshaw, 72, of Versailles, passed away Saturday, November 16, 2013. A graveside service will be held Saturday, November 23 at 1 p.m. at the Cliff Hill Cemetery in Versailles. Maxine R. Young

Maxine R. Young, 83 of Osgood, passed away Tuesday, November 19, 2013 at the University Hospital in Cincinnati. She was born near Zenas in Jennings County on January 25, 1930 the daughter of Robert Heathcoat and Zelma Baldwin Pickett. She was married to Alvin Young on June 25, 1949 and he preceded her in death on January 26, 2006.

Survivors include two sons Ron (Deb) Young of Versailles and Randy (Patty) Young of Osgood; one daughter Rosalie (Stanley) Allen of Indianapolis; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and one sister Evelyn Hull of Newbern.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, her sister Eileen Level, and her brothers Elvin Pickett and Larry Pickett, Sr.
Mrs. Young was a 1948 graduate of Napoleon High School. She was a former employee of Carol Cook in Greensburg and retired in 1992 after 25 years with Batesville Casket Company.

Maxine’s pastime was spent with her family, especially her grandchildren. She was known in the community as an expert pie baker. Maxine was a member of the Dabney Baptist Church.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 23 at 10:30 a.m. at the Dabney Baptist Church with Rev. Mike Bell officiating. Burial will be in the Flat Rock Cemetery near Osgood. Visitation will be Friday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. also at the Dabney Baptist Church. Memorials may be given to the Napoleon Fire Department in care of the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home.

Harold A. “Leck” Meyer

Harold A. “Leck” Meyer, 82 of Aurora, passed away Tuesday, November 19, 2013. Funeral services will be Saturday, November 23, at 11 a.m. at the Mt. Sinai United Methodist Church, Aurora, with burial following in Mt. Sinai Cemetery. Military rites will be given by the Dearborn County Honor Guard. Visitation will be from 9-11 a.m., Saturday at the church. Memorials may be given to the Mt. Sinai United Methodist Church or the Alzheimer’s Foundation. Elmer Ronnie Sawyer

Elmer Ronnie Sawyer, 70 of Dillsboro, passed away Tuesday, November 19, 2013 at the Manderley Health Care Center in Osgood. Ronnie was born Friday, June 11, 1943 in Williamstown, Kentucky, the son of Dewey Sawyer and Abbie (Martin) Sawyer. He married Sharon Mae (Poling) Sawyer on October 3, 1964 and she survives.

Along with wife, Sharon he is survived by son Jerry (Carrie) Sawyer of Dillsboro; grandchildren, Chris and Crystal Sawyer, great grandchildren Lilly and Ayden Sawyer; and brothers LeRoy Sawyer of Hamilton, Ohio and Robert Sawyers of Inverness, FL. He was preceded in death by son Christopher Sawyer and daughter Cindy Sawyer and brother Claude Sawyer.

Mr. Sawyer was a retired press room employee at Hillenbrands, retiring in 1994 after 26 years, and had been president of Local 525 Union. He was a member of the Hope Baptist Church, and was an avid coon hunter, and also enjoyed fishing, and squirrel hunting.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, November 23, at Hope Baptist Church, Dillsboro, with Pastor Tom Holt officiating. Burial will be in Green Cemetery at Elrod. Kathie Lynn Johnson

Kathie Lynn Johnson, 63 of Indianapolis, passed away Friday, November 15, 2013. She was born on June 7, 1950 in Ripley County, the daughter of Abe and Myrtle Schneider.

Kathie graduated from Jac-Cen-Del High School in 1968. She attended business college in Louisville. After working several years at the State House in Indianapolis, Kathie worked for over 20 years as a Principal Systems Analyst for Liberty Mutual.

Survivors include siblings, Ralph (Pat) Schneider and Marcia Whisman; companion Randy Richey; beloved dog April; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Sherrill Cheda.

A private celebration of life will be held. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Ripley County Humane Society. Flanner and Buchanan Funeral Centers, Indianapolis, is in charge of arrangements.
