Julie A. Eckstein
Julie A. Eckstein, 43, of Batesville, died Friday, October 24, 2014 at Margaret Mary Health. Born January 10, 1971 in Greensburg, she is the daughter of Lucille (Nee: Schwering) and Charles Simon. She married Mark Eckstein on October 7, 1995, at St. Maurice Church in Napoleon, and he preceded her in death May 13, 2014.
Julie worked as a payroll processor at the Forethought Company and was a member of St. Maurice Church. Julie was energy in motion. Her family explained she was well organized and usually “on mission,” which led her to be inpatient with those who weren’t. Nicknamed “the hammer” by her family, they joked she was judge and jury and her word was law. She was blunt and to the point, but also one of the most generous, kindhearted individuals you could find, always thinking of others first and wanting to do whatever she could to help. Active at church, she used her beautiful voice to be a cantor as well as being a lector. Julie was an avid golfer, loved to read, crocheted blankets, hated driving, was always cold, like to watch “The Voice” and apparently made up words playing the game Boggle that weren’t in any English dictionary printed to date. The family talked about what an excellent baker she was with her chocolate chip cookies, fudge and cinnamon rolls being hard to beat.
Julie is survived by her daughter, Carmen, and son, Jared, both at home; parents Lucille and Charles Simon of Osgood; sisters Janet Wagner of Osgood, Sandra Wenning of Greensburg, Jennifer Ricke of Osgood; brothers Tony Simon, Michael Simon, Joseph Simon and Paul Simon, all of Osgood; in addition to numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, October 29, at St. Maurice Church in Napoleon, followed by burial in the church cemetery. The family requests memorials to the Carmen and Jared Eckstein Trust Fund or Phi Beta Psi Sorority Cancer Research. Weigel Funeral Home, Batesville, was in charge of arrangements.
Evelyn Emma (Vornheder) Smith
Evelyn Emma (Vornheder) Smith, our deceased Christian wife, mother, aunt, sister, grandmother, and daughter of Henry Ernest Vornheder and Bessie Marie Louise (Lanvermeyer) Vornheder was born in Dearborn County, Indiana on Tuesday, July 21, 1925. She was the older of two children and her younger brother Paul survives her.
Evelyn grew up in Dillsboro and on Saturday, June 16, 1945, was united in holy matrimony to Donald Walter Smith by Reverend Sand of St. Peter Lutheran Church, Dillsboro, Indiana. They started their married life together in Versailles, Indiana and after a couple years, moved to Dillsboro, Indiana for four years prior to relocating to Aurora, Indiana where they resided for more than 50 years. While here the couple was blessed with three children: Philip, Kimberly, and Thomas.
Throughout their married life, St. Peter Lutheran Church at Dillsboro remained their church home. For many years early in their marriage, Evelyn sang in the choir with her husband Donald, and remained quite active in various groups within the church. Evelyn worked a variety of jobs throughout her life beginning with the Cochran Chair Company in Aurora, Indiana and later in life enjoyed working at the Tree House Restaurant, also in Aurora. Regardless where she was employed, she made many close friends throughout the years. On June 16, 1995, a 50th wedding reception was held in their honor at St. Peter Lutheran. At that time, she and Donald were surrounded by their extended family and friends, including their niece Terry (Vornheder) Conway and nephew Mark Vornheder, their own children, and numerous grandchildren. Evelyn and Donald moved to Greendale, Indiana, and upon Donald’s passing, also at the age of 89, she moved to Bedford, Kentucky to be closer to her daughter Kimberly.
She leaves to mourn her departure her three children: Philip L. Smith of Cincinnati, Ohio, Kimberly S. Temple of Bedford, Kentucky, and Thomas B. Smith of St. Louis, Missouri; a brother, Paul Vornheder (and the late Jean Cockerham-Vornheder) of Punta Gorda, Florida; a son-in-law, Bob Temple, two daughters-in-law, Mary Radike-Smith and Adrienne Gilbert-Smith; a deeply-loved niece, Terry Conway and nephews Mark Vornheder and James Robins; three grandsons: Benjamin Smith, Quenton Temple, and Garrett Smith; four granddaughters: Martha Smith, Katelyne Temple, Alexandra Smith and Lauren (Smith) Henderson; one great niece, one great great niece, great nephews and a limitless number of friends.
Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m., Thursday, October 30, at DeVries Funeral Home at 12887 Lenover Street, Dillsboro, Indiana. A service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, October 31, at St. Peter Lutheran Church, 12963 North Street (Rt. 62), Dillsboro, Indiana. The burial service will immediately follow at the Oakdale Cemetery, also in Dillsboro. Relatives and friends are welcome at the services and to a reception at the church following. Memorial contributions are welcome and should be made out to the St. Peter Lutheran Church in Dillsboro.

Valerie Joan Flint Elston, 73, of Madison, died Monday, October 27, 2014 at the Water’s of Clifty Falls in Madison. Funeral arrangements will be announced by the Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre, 325 Demaree Drive in Madison.
Ronald Eugene Watson, Jr.
Ronald Eugene Watson Jr., 45 of Osgood, passed away Monday, October 20, 2014. There were no services. Arrangements were entrusted to Neal’s Funeral Home, Osgood. www.nealsfuneralhome.net.
Walter E. Kieffer
Walter E. Kieffer, 86, of Versailles, passed away Wednesday, October 22, 2014 at Ripley Crossing at Milan. Walter was born Sunday, October 30, 1927 in New Marion, the son of John and Margaret (Kieffer) Kieffer. He married June Hamblin Kieffer who survives.
Walter served his country in the Army during the occupation of Japan near the end of WWII. He was a former employee of 37 years at the Jefferson Proving Ground, and attended the St. John’s Catholic Church at Osgood. He loved the outdoors, and walking in the woods.
Walter is survived by his wife June Kieffer; daughters Theresa (Ben) Eadler, Elaine (Robert) Vollmer, and Peggy (Wayne) Borchelt all of Osgood; daughter-in-law: Donna Kieffer of Greensburg; grandchildren Heather Iyer, Christopher Eadler, Matthew and Stephen Borchelt, Adam Vollmer, Jenni Fletcher, and Justin Kieffer; great grandchildren Michael, Brady and Isabelle Fletcher, Nikhil, Shemsidin and Madeleine Iyer, Quinn and Cameron Eadler, McKayla and Jaxson Kieffer. He was preceded in death by his son Michael Kieffer; brothers Paul, David, Arthur, and Martin Kieffer; and sisters Lucille Colley and Geneva Westmeyer.
La Verne “Bernie” Cutter
La Verne “Bernie” Cutter, 85, of Dillsboro, passed away Saturday morning, October 25, 2014 at the Waters of Dillsboro, Ross Manor with her family by her side. Bernie was born November 18, 1928 in Dillsboro to Irvan Cash and Nellie Waldon Cash Farrell.
She graduated from Dillsboro High School, and on June 5, 1948 she was married to Melvin Cutter.
They were the parents of two children; Linda L. Myers (Russ) and Randy M. Cutter (Sarah) and two grandchildren, Jared Caleb and Cora Leigh Cutter. Bernie retired from Schenley following several years of employment, and enjoyed playing cards and bowling. She actively bowled until she was 83. She and Melvin traveled the country and spent six months a year in St. Petersburg, Fla. and six months a year in Dillsboro. Her husband, Melvin passed away in October of 1999.
Bernie was also preceded in death by two sisters, Darleen and Margaret.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, October 28, at DeVries Funeral Home in Dillsboro, with Pastor Pamela Thiede of St. Peters Lutheran Church officiating. Bernie was a long time member of St. Peters Lutheran Church. She was laid to rest at Oakdale Cemetery next to her husband, Melvin. The family would appreciate memorials in her memory be made to St. Peters Lutheran Church or to the Friendship Volunteer Fire Dept. DeVries Funeral Home, Dillsboro, was in charge of arrangements.
