Milan Lady Indians celebrate victory over Lady Lancers

Gary Franklin
SPORTS EDITOR

If heart and determination could beat skill level on the basketball court, the Milan Lady Indians would find victory game in and game out. Far too often they have found themselves beaten and broken physically only to look up at the scoreboard at game’s end to see they came up short of the mark; however, when a willingness to take one for the team is considered for their effort, they have never met defeat, at least so far.

This game was a victory noted in the score book for the Tribe. At the game’s final horn’s sounding at their MHS hosted battle Saturday morning, Dec. 6, the varsity Lady Indians behind Head Coach Bob Bressert claimed a victory over the visiting Edinburgh Lady Lancers. Nothing came easy for the Lady Indians who laboriously battled for and acquired the varsity six point, 49-43 victory. The Lady Indians JV behind Coach Kevin Elder also claimed victory, 45-36.

(M=Milan 49) (E=E'burgh 43)

Lady Indians senior Harlie Miller controlled the opening tip and scored the first FG for the 2-0 Milan lead in what would be a highly contested battle right to the final horn’s sounding. Edinburgh’s Littiken connected on one of two FT shots taken, leading to an Indians rally where senior Paige Lacey scored a FG, senior Grace Herzog scored a FG and freshman Baylee Yorn drilled a 3 pointer for a 9-1 lead. An ensuing Lady Lancers run included a Schooler FG, a pair of FT connections by Weddle and a FG by Rooks that pulled the Lady Lancers to within two points at 7-9, heading to second period action.

Quarter Two
A Lady Lancer Hoskins FG followed by teammate Schooler’s trey put Edinburgh on top, 12-9. Milan freshman Anjeannette Laws scored one of two FT attempts. Edinburgh Schooler added a FG. Indian Lacey connected on one of two FT offerings, followed by back to back FG scores by Lady Lancers Rooks and Howard. Howard then added a pair of FT connections, however, Lady Indian senior Grace Herzog’s capitalizing on an old fashioned FG/FT combination opportunity, cut the Tribe’s deficit to six at 14-20. Three consecutive 1 plus 1 FT opportunities went awry by Edinburgh’s Schooler and back-to-back trips by Milan’s Herzog, which led to a Lady Indian Miller FG. A pair of FT connections by Edinburgh’s Hoskins led to senior Lady Indian Becky Hoffrogge’s FG and back-to-back 1 plus 1 FT trips to the charity stripe where she knotted the game at 22. With 1:40 remaining in the half, Indian Herzog recaptured the lead for the Tribe with one for two FT scorings before she added another FG but found her FT opportunity bounding awry. An Edinburgh time out led to the final scoring in the first half with a FT made of two attempted by Scrogham followed by two FT scores by Schooler to bring forth a 25-25 tie at halftime.

Quarter Three
Back-to-back Lady Indians FG scores by senior Hoffrogge got Milan off with the lead. A FG by Edinburgh’s Howard was countered by Indian Herzog’s FG connection. Lancers Howard scored a FG and again Indian Herzog countered. With the Lady Indians up 33-29, the remainder of the period’s scoring came hence: Lancer Weddle 1 for 2 FT connections, Indian Herzog FG, Lancer Schooler a FG, Lady Indian senior Tapanga Gauck with a FG, Edinburgh Weddle a FG and Edinburgh Littiken a FG, ending the third, Milan 37-36 Edinburgh.

Quarter Four
Lady Lancer Rooks opened scoring, momentarily capturing the one-point edge, Milan’s Herzog countered. Milan’s Hoffrogge missed a pair of FTs, but teammate Miller drained a downtown three-pointer to put Milan back in the lead by four at 42-38. Immediately Lancer’s Howard delivered the counter with a trey. Milan’s Yorn missed a pair of FT opportunities. Milan teammates Hoffrogge and Herzog followed with missed FT opportunities. A Herzog FG gave the Lady Indians a 44-41 lead, leading to a time out being called with just 1:30 left on the games clock. On returning to action, Milan’s Yorn delivered a pair of FT connections. Edinburgh’s Littiken made a FG but missed her chance for the FT addition. Just 4.1 seconds remained when Lady Indian Herzog added 1 of 2 FT points, leading to her connecting for a pair at 2.5 seconds, to end all game scoring with Milan the 49-43 victory.
