Charles Robert “Butch” Noel


Charles Robert “Butch” Noel, 65, of Versailles, was born on February 20, 1949, in Milan. He was the son of the late Charley Noel and Mary Evelyn Stainton Folsom.

Charles was a Vietnam Army Veteran and had received a Purple Heart. He belonged to the Versailles American Legion. He had worked various jobs in his life. He was a collector of various years of model cars and also enjoyed flying the remote operated airplanes and helicopters. Another past time hobby was playing his guitar and banjo. His family remarked that he always was buying old tractors or other motor operated machinery and he would fix them up and sell them for a little profit. For the last 15 years of his life, he lived with his mother and lovingly watched over her and took care of her. Again, his family jokingly stated that he loved mowing the yard and sometimes they think, he probably mowed two to three times a week. He will be missed by his family and friends. Butch died September 10, 2014 at his home.

Survivors include his sister Betty St. John of Versailles.

Funeral services were held Saturday, September 13, at Neal’s Funeral Home, Osgood, with burial in the Grandview Memorial Gardens, Madison. Military graveside services by Versailles American Legion. Memorials may be given to the Versailles American Legion. Neal’s Funeral Home, Osgood, was in charge of arrangements. www.nealsfuneralhome.net.


Mildred Belle Jones

Mildred Belle Jones, died peacefully on Friday, September 12, 2014. She was born on January 31, 1930, to the late Clarence and Sarah Mildred Jones.

She is survived by her sister, Virginia Beard, of Merritt Island, Florida. She is a also survived by many special nieces and nephews.

For the last 22 years “Belle” shared a home with long-time friend and caretaker, Wilma Johnston. There will be a private service at the Forest Hill Cemetery in Moores Hill. The date for this will be at the convenience of the family.


Alta R. Diem

Alta R. Diem, 99, of Cross Plains, passed away Friday, September 12, 2014, at the Dearborn County Hospital in Lawrenceburg. She was born near New Marion on August 19, 1915, the daughter of Emmett and Grace Caster Robinson. She was married to Henry Diem on December 23, 1933 and he preceded her in death on March 27, 1998.

Survivors include two sons, David (Vicki) Diem of Versailles and Tony (Shirley) Diem of Cross Plains; seven grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; one sister Ina Sininger of Hamilton, Ohio. She was also preceded in death by her parents, infant son John, her brother Arza Robinson and her sister Edith Benham.

Mrs. Diem was a homemaker and along with her husband owned and operated a dairy farm where they milked jersey cows. Alta was an 80-year member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church at Olean where she participated in the Martha Circle.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Sept. 15, at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Olean with Pastor Curtis Black officiating. Burial will be in the Cliff Hill Cemetery in Versailles. Memorials may be given to the St. Paul Lutheran Church or the Cliff Hill Cemetery in care of the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home, Versailles.


James Morton Shanks

James Morton Shanks 70, Kenneth City, Fla., passed away on Tuesday, August 26, 2014. He was born in Milan, the son of James and Laverne Shanks.

Survivors include mother, Laverne; sister, Verna Voss; children: Chris, Carol, Camille, Cindy, Garret and ten grandchildren.

He retired from the city of Pinellas Park with 22 years of service. Memorial services will be held at Park Station, Pinellas Park, Fla., on Saturday. Sept 20 at 2 p.m.
