Boys Ripley County Tourney Championship

Aggressive early point production got hopes up for Coach Travis Wrightsman’s South Ripley Raiders to become this year’s champion of the RCT held at South Ripley; however, mid to late fourth quarter action, beyond their control, set the scene for what has become the norm of Coach Aaron Garrett’s Batesville Bulldogs to close the deal with a victory. Final tally was Bulldogs 50-44 over the Raiders following a fourth period where Batesville was allowed to outscore SR 22-13 to overtake their third period deficit of three.

QUARTER ONE
In startling fashion, the Raiders went on the attack to a 7-0 lead following the scoring by Chase Samples with a FG, Elijah Roepke’s 3 pointer launched from near center court and a Brady Meyer lay-up for a FG. Bulldog Walsman netted a basket to break the ice, but Raider Meyer scored back-to-back FGs that were only countered by the one of two FT deliveries by Bulldog Walsman, ending first period action with SR leading 11-3.

QUARTER TWO
Bulldog Schebler opened second period scoring only to have Raider Tucker counter with a trey of his own. Raider Samples scored a FG for a 10 point lead. Bulldog Burkhart delivered a three pointer, Raider Samples nailed a counter three. Bulldog Walsman connected on one of two FT shots, leading to a three quarter court three point addition at the horn by Raider senior Chase Samples for a halftime Raider lead of 22-10.

QUARTER THREE
At the 6:50 mark of the third, Bulldog Walsman connected for a FG/FT combo, then added another FG score. Raider Meyer scored a pair of FTs followed by teammate Samples delivery of a FG. Bulldog Walsman hit one of two FT shots, Raider Tucker added a FG followed by back-to-back FGs scored by Bulldog Walsman at the 2:15 mark. Bulldog Burkhart netted a three pointer, Walsman scored a FG, Raider Derek Turner scorched the net with the delivery of a trey, but Bulldog Walsman negated it with a FG/FT combo before the quarter expired, SR yet leading by three at 31-28.

QUARTER FOUR
Raider Roepke scored a FG, only to have Bulldog Vogelsang score a FG followed by a three pointer by teammate Walsman for the first tie of the game with the score 33-33, that coming at the 6:05 mark of the fourth. Bulldog Schebler put the Dogs on top for the first time with his net popping three pointer at the 5 minute mark, then followed it with a FG connection to give the Bulldogs a five point edge. A couple of Bulldogs misses on the front end of One + One FT opportunities led to Raider Turner’s FG/FT combo, cutting SR's deficit to two at 36-38. At 2:35, Burkhart nailed a three pointer, leading to a technical being whistled on the Raiders’ coach for questioning the obvious unfavorable calls being made, to which Schebler added a pair of FT scores to give Batesville the seven point advantage at 43-36. Remaining action resulted in a pair of FT deliveries by Raider Meyer and a teammate Roepke three pointer at 1:15 to cut their deficit to just a basket at 41-43. Bulldog Vogelsang made one of two FT attempts, teammate Schebler connected for a pair at the charity stripe, as did Walsman, leading to a Raider deficit of seven. A Raider Roepke three pointer at the 20.8 second mark left the score 48-44. The final scoring came from Bulldog Schebler at the charity stripe with a pair of FT connections for a final tally in Batesville's favor at 50-44 over South Ripley.
