Mary Jessie Rea

Mary Jessie Rea, 67, of Rexville, passed away Friday, January 16, 2015, at her home. She was born at Madison on June 17, 1947, the daughter of Lewis and Rosetta Turner Demaree. She was married to Lester Rea on October 3, 1970 and he survives.

Other survivors include one son, John (Kelly) Rea of Rexville; three granddaughters, Hannah, Julia, and Elizabeth Rea. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Mrs. Rea was a 1965 graduate of Madison High School and was her class salutatorian. She was also a delegate to Hoosier Girls State and was named the school’s DAR Good Citizen. She was employed with Conn Organ in Madison and had worked at the Jefferson Proving Ground as a teletypist in the headquarters building and was a secretary for weapons maintenance. Mary was also an accomplished artist. She was a member of the North Madison Christian Church and attended the Versailles Church of Christ.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, January 20 at 11 a.m. at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles. Burial will be in the Fairmont Cemetery in Madison. Memorials may be given to the Versailles Church of Christ in care of the funeral home.


Charlie Acre

Charlie Acre, 71, of Cross Plains, passed away Sunday, January 18, 2015, at the home of his son in North Vernon. He was born at Milan on March 6, 1943, the son of Russell and Ora Roberts Acre.

Survivors include his mother, Ora Acre Alsop of Cross Plains; three sons, Robert J. Acre and Brad Acre both of Greensburg, and Brian (Kimberly) Acre of North Vernon; four grandchildren, Kaley Acre, Brogan Acre, Mackenzie Spurlin and Makayla Spurlin; one brother, David Acre of Friendship; and his sister, Rica of Harrison, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his father, and his step-father Porter Alsop.

Mr. Acre was a 1961 graduate of Cross Plains High School and was a member of the Wildcats basketball team. He had worked for Louis Stegemoller Electric in Friendship and retired in 2002 after 30 years as a mechanic with the Indiana State Highway Department in Aurora. Charlie had also served with the US Army and was a member of the Army Reserves.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 21, at 11 a.m. at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home with Hospice chaplain Steve Holland officiating. Burial will be in the Akers Friendship Cemetery with military graveside rites by the Versailles American Legion. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5-7 p.m. Memorials may be given to the Friendship Fire Department in care of the funeral home.


Robert “Soap” Sutherlin


Robert “Soap” Sutherlin, 76, of Versailles, passed away Sunday, January 18 at his home. Funeral services are pending at the Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles.

Earl H. Palmer

Earl H. Palmer, 87, of Milan, passed away Saturday, January 17, 2015. Funeral services will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, January 20, at Laws-Carr-Moore Funeral Home, Milan. Linda Sue Hess Oelker, 62, of Sunman, passed away Thursday, January 15, 2015. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Jan. 20 at 10 a.m. at the Cook Rosenberger Funeral Home, Sunman.
