Jac-Cen-Del Lady Eagles double down on visiting Lawrenceburg Lady Tigers

Gary Franklin
SPORTS EDITOR

A regular season battle for the Jac-Cen-Del Lady Eagles, played at JCDHS on Tuesday evening January 13, resulted in wins for both JV and varsity teams.

VARSITY
Quarter One
The varsity game’s opening basket was scored by junior Hayley Bruns (42), which ended up being her only score for the game. The Lawrenceburg Tigers knotted the game at two and gained the 4-2 lead before Eagle senior Kelsey Bowling (14) netted her first FG score for the 4-4 tie. Eagle junior Jordan Day added a FG score to put the Eagles back up, 6-4, only to have the Tigers add a FG an a three pointer for the 9-6 edge. Freshman Eagle Lilly Simon (22) rattled the rim for her first 3 point basket to knot the game at 9. Again, back to back FG scores by the Tigers gave them the advantage, this time by four at 13-9. Eagle Simon cut that in half with another FG score at the one minute mark, only to have another Tiger FG counter it. Senior Eagle Jenna Hughes added a FG, but the Tigers once again countered it; however, as the horn sounded to end the first period, Eagle junior Jordan Day (30) rang the bell with a FG score to finish period one, Lawrenceburg up by a pair at 17-15.

Quarter Two
As the game progressed in second quarter action, the hot battle resumed with back and forth scoring to a tie at 17 and at 25 following back to back FG scores by sophomore Eagle Rosie Newhart (15) to knot and put JCD up by a pair at 27-25. Only momentarily, however, as the Tigers knotted the game by the halftime break with a FG score.

Quarter Three
A flurry of scores by the Eagles in the third, gave JCD a solid advantage of 13 points at 45-32 heading to the fourth and final period. Simon scored a three pointer, a pair of FGs and a FT. Bowling a FG, Hughes a pair of FTs, Day a FG and Newhart two more FGs, while the Tigers could only add a FG and a three pointer to their team tally.

Quarter Four
Final period scoring additions by the Eagles over the fourth included: a Simon FG and two FTs, a pair of Newhart FGs, a freshman Morgen Carroll (52) FG, a Hughes FT, a senior Jacqlyn Menchhofer (50) FG and a couple of Jordan Day FT connections to advance their score to 60. Despite the Tigers outscoring the Eagles 17-15 in the final period, the advantage gained by JCD through the third was more than Lawrenceburg could overcome while basically just trading baskets. The game culminated for Coach Scott Smith's JCD Eagles varsity at 60-49, for an 11 point victory.
